We’re fast approaching the halfway point in Agatha All Along, and the fourth episode of the season definitely did not disappoint. Now, just in case the headline wasn’t warning enough, we’re about to dive right into the spoilers of the latest episode of Agatha All Along, so beware as spoilers are ahead!

As the episode begins, we quickly discover that Mrs. Hart is in fact dead and that the previous episode’s shocking ending was not a fakeout. The coven works on digging a grave for their fallen comrade, and they all begin playing the blame game which is when Teen shuts things down by poignantly telling the group the fatal mistake was that the group didn’t look out for one another.

Following their loss, Agatha suggests summoning up a backup green witch and they use Teen’s spellbook to summon a new green witch to the road. Much to Agatha’s displeasure, fate brings Rio to the road to fill the group’s void, but we couldn’t be happier to have Aubrey Plaza back.

With Rio now joining the makeshift coven, the group walks along the road when they suddenly see a cabin in the woods ahead. Alice is adamant on not entering the house, but the road makes it clear it’s the only way forward in their journey. Upon arriving at the cabin, they notice a waxing moon on the door hinting that they’ve reached the fire phase of the trial.

As they enter the house, the group’s attire once again shifts this time giving the group a groovy new look in line with the fashion of the 70s.

The show quickly begins to reaffirm our previous suspicions that Rio and Agatha share a very complicated past with hints that the pair were more than just acquaintances with hints of a romantic past. As the two share a moment together in the sound booth, Agatha turns on the broadcast speaker so that the group can hear Rio go on about how she can’t wait to claim the witches’ bodies after watching them wither around her as Agatha gets her powers back – a move clearly designed to make the rest of the coven suspicious of Rio.

While looking around the room for a clue such as the riddle they found at the location of the first trial, Teen discovers a record that reads “Play Me.” Without thinking, he plays the record and it begins playing some backwards tune which is when the pendulum clock begins ticking as Lilia informs the group they’ve all been cursed: Cue the beginning of the second trial.

Agatha All Along episode 4 introduces a rocking new rendition of The Ballad of the Witches' Road

Shortly after the trial begins, Lilia begins to feel a burning sensation on her which is when they realize the trial is to break the curse and that the only way to do so is by facing the curse head-on. Jen is next to feel the burning sensation on her shoulders and the group begins to hear the sound of wings flapping, which Rio says is the physical form of the curse.

It’s then that Alice fully realizes this is her trial to overcome and she begins spiraling on about how she didn’t think the curse her mother had warned her of was actually real. She reveals the burn scars on her shoulders that match the group’s scars from the burning they felt as the trial began, as they piece together that the coven now shares the burden of Alice’s family’s curse.

Agatha quickly deduces that they need to perform Alice’s mom’s version of the Ballad of the Witches’ Road as she realizes the cover is a protection ballad designed to help protect Alice from the curse, that its popularity and Lorna’s success in ensuring it’s played frequently by fans was a way for her to keep Alice safe all these years.

To defeat the curse, the coven begins playing Lorna’s version of the ballad which gives us an incredible new rendition of the show’s now iconic tune as the group rocks out to the ballad. As they perform, the room around them is engulfed in flames – a callback to how the house in the first trial was surrounded by water as the trial neared its end – which is when Alice is able to see the physical embodiment of the curse: a demonic winged creature.

As the group concludes their rendition of the song, the curse swoops down upon Alice and latches onto her shoulders before going up into flames as they finish the ballad and successfully pass the trial.

Agatha All Along episode 4 ending explained: A near-death experience gives us a hint about Teen’s identity

After vanquishing the curse, the piano in the room opens revealing a pathway back to the road, but the coven’s celebration is short-lived as Teen gives them a scare when he passes out, having been struck by a piece of glass during the performance when the sound booth window shattered.

They quickly get back to the road and Agatha begins panicking as she asks Jen to do something, a far departure from the reaction she had to Mrs. Hart’s death which hints that Agatha has already formed a strong bond with Teen. Jen is able to use a healing spell to heal his wound and save him, and Agatha watches over him as he recovers.

When Teen comes to, he asks Agatha if she put the sigil on him. She assures him she did not, but then realizes she wouldn’t know if she did as the sigil would impact the witch who cast the spell as well. She tells him sigils are destroyed when they’re no longer needed, and confides in him that you don’t need to know a person’s name to know who they are. Teen quips back to be careful not to say something nice to him, before asking Agatha what really happened to her son, which is when she clams up and walks off.

As Agatha rejoins the rest of the witches, they’re showing off battle scars from past encounters and Agatha’s return inspires Rio to open up about a battle scar of her own. She tells the group how a long time ago she loved someone and she had to do something that she didn’t want to because it was her job, but that it still hurt them and that she is her scar.

It’s clear this unnamed person is Agatha, as the story sends Agatha running off to stretch her legs. Rio goes to Agatha, and Agatha pulls Rio in for a hug and then begins to go in for a kiss which is when Rio goes and runs it all by telling Agatha, “Agatha, that boy isn’t yours.”

Agatha pulls back and walks away, bringing the episode to a close and leaving us with confirmation that Teen is not the son Agatha gave up. So while we still don’t know who Teen truly is, it seems we can rule out the theory that he’s Agatha’s long-lost son. Still, it’s clear that Agatha has formed a strong connection with Teen and we’re excited to see that dynamic play out as Agatha All Along enters the second half of its season.

Agatha All Along is streaming now on Disney+ with new episodes releasing weekly at 9/8c through October 30.
