Our journey down the Witches’ Road has officially begun and the third episode of Agatha All Along finds Agatha and her makeshift coven of witches preparing to finally embark down the Witches’ Road.

Before we journey down the Witches’ Road with a look at the third episode of the season, let this serve as your official spoiler warning as we’re about to get into the heart of the episode and there will be major plot spoilers along the way!

After passing through the doorway to the Witches’ Road, Jen immediately questions the inclusion of Mrs. Hart in the group as she voices concerns about her not belonging on the road and the threat it could cause them all not having an actual Green witch on their journey as each trial will test the various skills of witchcraft. As we learn from the group, their journey will test them and their knowledge of the craft through a series of trials that won’t be easy to pass.

As the group discusses their plans, Jen asks Teen about his identity which is when we learn that it’s not just Agatha who his identity has been protected from as none of the witches are able to hear his name. It’s then that Lilia reveals that someone has put a sigil on Teen, which is basically a redaction spell that hides something. In this case, the sigil seems to be designed to hide Teen from witchcraft.

Teen understandably questions why anyone would place a sigil on him and Agatha says she doesn’t know who might have placed it upon him. As the group discusses the sigil, Mrs. Hart wanders off on her own and sits down on the ground beside the road which is when she nearly is pulled into the ground with Alice only narrowly managing to pull her to safety.

Turns out Rule No. 1 of walkin the witches’ road is to never step off the road.

Agatha and her coven first their first trial

Jen notices a glowing light on the road that leads off to a beach house in the distance. The coven sets out down the road to the house which features an intricately designed door featuring the phases of the moon indicating the water stage of the cycle.

Upon entering the house, the group's clothes are transformed into new attire fitting their environment which is giving Hamptons beach house. Once inside, the group quickly realizes there is no apparent exit as Teen then finds a letter on the fireplace mantel which contains a riddle to be solved, “My age has value, I’m no fun alone. I mess with your mind, my tricks are well known.”

They first wonder if the riddle is referring to a witch, but then Mrs. Hart notices a bottle of wine on the counter and excitedly cracks it open to enjoy a drink. It’s then the coven realizes wine is the answer to the riddle and they believe they must all drink it.

As the group prepares to drink the wine, Jen pulls Teen aside and warns him to watch his back with Agatha, telling him of how she traded her own child for the Book of the Damned. According to Jen, no one knows what happened to him, some say he might be a demon, others say he might be an agent of Mephisto – yes, we finally got an official Mephisto namedrop!

Once the group begins drinking their wine, a timer begins ticking down from 30 minutes giving the group an urgency to figure out what the trial is going to entail outside of simply drinking some wine. Aside from Teen who does not drink the wine as a minor, the rest of the coven sip the wine… well almost everyone as Agtha quietly tosses her wine into a plant only for it reappear in her glass.

As Alice is finishing her wine, Teen notices a tattoo on her arm which Alice says her mom made her get as it wards off curses and tells Teen how her family is cursed. We get a hint of Teen’s identity when Alice tells him she got the tattoo when she was just 13 which is when Teen says a lot happened at 13 for him too. Their conversation is interrupted, though, before we learn any specifics when Mrs. Hart’s face begins to swell up and they realize they’ve all been poisoned.

The trial seems to be figuring out the cure to the poison before the timer runs out and Jen begins attempting to figure out what the wine might have been dosed with as everyone’s faces begin to swell and then go back to normal in a brief moment of time. This is when Jen realizes that they were poisoned with a fast-acting poison that will result in death without the proper antidote.

Agatha attempts to break out of the house by smashing the window, which is when they realize she didn’t drink the wine. She grabs the glass and throws it to the ground but then the wine begins appearing in another glass. When Teen goes to drink the wine telling Agatha, if she won’t drink it he will, an almost maternal nature kicks in and Agatha downs the wine so that Teen is not put at risk.

The group quickly realizes that the next symptom of the poison is hallucinations after Mrs. Hart calls out Wanda’s name before passing out on the sofa. With only 15 minutes remaining, the rest of the group races into action as Jen begins gathering the ingredients for the antidote.

The Witches’ Road claims its first victim

After Jen, Alice, and Lilia face the demons of their past in their respective hallucinations, they come back together in the kitchen with their ingredients so that Jen can begin working on the potion. As if the pressure of being in a race against time wasn’t bad enough, Jen notices that the house seems to be underwater now and water is quickly starting to pour in through the crack Agatha made in the window.

As Teen helps stir the potion, Agatha’s delayed hallucination sets in as she begins hearing a baby crying. She goes to the bassinet where the cries are coming from, but when she pulls back the blanket there is a Darkhold under instead of a baby. It’s clear we’re going to be unpacking the backstory of Agatha and her son across the season, and we’re excited to see where the story goes. But back to the action.

Jen is working hard to whip up the potion and quickly realizes something is missing.  She begins to spiral about being useless without her powers, which is when Agatha gives her a pep talk of sorts, telling Jen that while she always hated her, she left Jen alone because what she does is important as they can take her power but not her knowledge. It’s then that Jen realizes they need the blood of the unpoisoned, aka Teen who did not drink the wine. They slice Teen’s hand and allow his blood to drop into the potion which proves successful just in the nick of time.

The group all drinks the antidote but they realize the timer is still ticking as Mrs. Hart hasn’t taken a drink as she was still lying passed out on the couch. They seem to get the antidote to her just in time and then the oven door flies open, revealing a doorway back to the Witches’ Road, as the timer stops.

After a quip from Lilia about not going into the oven as she once had a friend who was pushed into the oven, water begins pouring into the house and they all make their way through the oven which sends them down a slide back to the Witches’ Road.

It seems they’ve successfully passed their first trial, but their excitement is shortlived as they discover Mrs. Hart is not breathing and is dead. The Witches’ Road has claimed its first victim, proving just how dangerous the journey will be and hinting that not all will make it out alive at the end of the journey.

Perhaps we should have known Mrs. Hart would not survive the Witches’ Road when the episode began with the foreshadowing that she was not meant to be on the road, but we certainly did not expect to bid farewell to her character so early in the season. Still, it was a big move we’re happy the writers went with as it proves that the stakes are high and no one is safe on the Witches’ Road.

Agatha All Along is streaming now on Disney+ with new episodes releasing weekly at 9/8c through October 30.
