All 3 MCU Phase Five movies (so far) ranked by Letterboxd rating

We still have more movies to go to complete Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but let's look at the Letterboxd ratings for the ones released so far.

It's sometimes hard to believe that we've made it to the fifth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a pop culture behemoth of a franchise that began 16 years ago with the release of Iron Man. Now, the MCU has expanded to more origin stories, sequels, and even television shows on the platform Disney Plus. Each year, Marvel fans have been fortunate enough to get new content (though some might say too much content) and that won't be stopping anytime soon. Even though the amount of releases is slowing down, fans still have a lot to look forward to from the superhero universe.

So far in Phase Five, we've seen Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the third Ant-Man movie that came out in Feb. 2023, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which came out in May 2023 and marked the third Guardians movie, and The Marvels, rounding out the year in Nov. 2023 as the sequel to Captain Marvel. In 2024, we're only going to be getting one new MCU movie, but it's one that's seriously highly anticipated. Of course, we're talking about Deadpool & Wolverine.

While we wait for Deadpool & Wolverine to premiere in July, let's revisit the three movies of the MCU Phase Five so far and see what users on Letterboxd have to say about them.

3. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Letterboxd rating: 2.3/5

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania being in third place shouldn't be much of a surprise. It's widely considered a setback for the MCU, though it did find its fans.

As a sequel to both Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Quantumania sees Scott's teenage daughter Cassie make contact with the Quantum Realm, which leads to the Lang family, along with Janet van Dyne, getting sucked into a portal. In the Quantum Realm, they must face new threats, namely villain Kang the Conqueror.

By MCU standards, Quantumania was a box office disappointment, and it didn't get good reviews either. Over on Letterboxd, the movie has a measly 2.3 out of 5 at the time of this writing, with one of the popular reviews from user Pepe Ruiloba reading, "It took me 31 films but I finally started to empathize with Scorsese."

Many reviewers critiqued Quantumania's visuals, particularly the CGI, with user ash saying the MCU sequel "is one of the worst looking films I have ever seen."

2. The Marvels

Letterboxd rating: 2.7/5

Another box office disappointment in Phase 5, unfortunately, is The Marvels. The movie, led by Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan, is a breath of fresh air in the MCU, but it still falls a little short in quality.

As a sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), The Marvels follows the three leads teaming up together to use their superpowers to save the universe. Though it's fantastic to see a women-led superhero movie and there's no doubt how great their performances are, I wish the storyline and pacing were better.

On Letterboxd, The Marvels has an alright rating of 2.7 out of 5 currently, with the reviews being pretty divisive. That said, many people seemed to find it entertaining, at least. User Zoë Rose Bryant wrote, "f**k the noise i had fun," while user matt lynch wrote, "Objectively terrible, very apparently hacked to pieces in post, barely a movie. I didn't hate it! It's amiably goofy and the cat stuff is really funny."

1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Letterboxd rating: 4/5

I think most can agree that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the best movie of the MCU Phase Five so far. It brings all the feels and connects Marvel fans in a way these movies are truly supposed to! Serving as a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Vol. 3 sees the return of the beloved superhero team as they work together to save Rocket's life.

Unlike the other two movies of Phase Five so far, Guardians 3 was a box office success, becoming one of the highest-grossing titles of 2023. A satisfying goodbye to the Guardians trilogy, the movie really tugs at fans' heartstrings and keeps the viewer guessing.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has a 4 out of 5 on Letterboxd at the time of this writing, which is pretty impressive. It's also the highest-rated Guardians movie on the platform. Some of the most popular Letterboxd reviews include one from user ram<3, who said Vol. 3 is "a f**king apology letter from marvel studios," and one from user the film drunk, who wrote, "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in."

It might not be a perfect score, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is proof that the MCU is still beloved.
