James Gunn’s Superman could be the most highly anticipated comic book movie of the decade. Depending on who you talk to, the DCEU was a disappointment. It was enjoyable and profitable, but it lost steam.

Now, the franchise is in the hands of James Gunn. After what he’s done with Guardians of the Galaxy, Superman is in good hands. It helps that the right people were cast to play characters to get the franchise going.

Here are the performers in Superman, who they’re playing, and a brief description of both.

Isabela Merced: Kendra Saunders (Hawkgirl)

Since Madame Web bombed, Isabela Merced has an opportunity to show off in a bigger role. Hawkgirl is a DC Comics hero that people will love. She's tough, smart, and loves whacking people with her Thanagarian Mace. Isabela Merce is also young enough to play Kendra Saunders for years.

Nathan Fillion

Nathan Fillion: Guy Gardner (Green Lantern)

Nathan Fillion has voiced Green Lantern in over half a dozen projects. It only makes sense that he’d eventually play a Green Lantern in a live-action role. While he was Hal Jordan in the other projects, being cast as the sarcastic Guy Gardner makes more sense. He'll be amazing.

Milly Alcock

Milly Alcock (rumored): Kara Zor-El (Supergirl)

According to IMDb, the House of Dragons star is only rumored to be Kara Zor-El in Superman. However, she will play her in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Hopefully, Milly Alcock will make an appearance in Superman’s post-credit scene.

Wendell Pierce

Wendell Pierce: Perry White

Warner Bros couldn’t have cast a better Perry. The veteran actor from The Wire knows how to play a hard-nosed character with a heart. Wendell Pierce will have the most underrated performance in Superman

Skyler Gisondo

Skyler Gisondo: Jimmy Olsen

Skyler Gisondo’s casting isn’t talked about enough. He’s perfect. His character in Righteous Gemstones (Gideon Gemstone) has some of Jimmy Olsen’s qualities. Among them is being brave. When things got bad, Gideon stepped up. That’s what Skyler is bringing to the table.

Anthony Carrigan

Anthony Carrigan: Rex Mason (Metamorpho)

Admittedly, I don’t know a lot about Anthony Carrigan. However, a quick Google search shows he’s been nominated for awards for his role in Barry. He’s also no stranger to DC Comics projects having played Victor Zsasz in Gotham. This should be a good fit.

Sean Gunn

Sean Gunn: Maxwell Lord

Sean Gunn playing Maxwell Lord is a weird casting. He’s mostly known for playing comedic roles. That being said, comedic actors always surprise people when they’re dramatic. Maybe we haven’t seen the best of Sean Gunn.

Pruitt Taylor Vince

Pruitt Taylor Vince: Jonathan and Neva Howell: Martha Kent

Out of nowhere, DC casts Pruitt Taylor Vince (Identity and Constantine) to play Jonathan Kent and Neva Howell (Burden and The Resident) as Martha Kent. Ma and Pa Kent are the most important people in young Clark Kent’s life. Without them, Superman would be a different person and hero. The one hope is that their story is better than Man of Steel.

Sara Sampaio

Sara Sampaio: Eve Teschmacher

Sara Sampaio is relatively new to acting. She’s only been performing since 2016, but modeling since the early 2000s. She’ll play Lex Luthor’s assistant Eve Teschmacher and it’s a smart move. This is a chance for her to show off her acting skills in a "small" role during a major movie.

Terence Rosemore

Terence Rosemore: Otis

Terence Rosemore has appeared in at least four James Gunn movies. In each of them, he's been a little-known character. It’ll be different in James Gunn's Superman. Otis is fun and made an impact during 1978's Superman. Hopefully, we’ll get an Otisburg moment from him. It's a classic scene.

María Gabriela de Faría

María Gabriela de Faría: Angela Spica (The Engineer)

María Gabriela de Faría was Maria Salazar in SciFi’s Deadly Class. The show may not have been renewed, but she was good as Maria. As The Engineer, she’ll show that Deadly Class canceling was a mistake. She would have become a comic book show legend.

Nicholas Hoult

Nicholas Hoult: Lex Luthor

This writer believes Nicholas Hoult’s path to greatness starts here. His roles in the X-Men franchise, Mad Max: Fury Road, and his Prime Time Emmy and Golden Globe nominations were only the beginning. We’ll see what he can do when he plays Superman’s greatest villain.

Rachel Brosnahan

Rachel Brosnahan: Lois Lane

Rachel Brosnahan is this writer’s favorite actor on this list. She was fantastic as Miriam 'Midge' Maisel in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She played a strong and passionate woman in an era where that was frowned upon. She’ll do that again as superstar and fearless reporter, Lois Lane.

David Corenswet

David Corenswet: Clark Kent (Superman)

I haven’t seen projects David Corenswet has been in. Nevertheless, people online love the casting. That leads this writer to believe it was the right choice. He's physically built to play him. He's 6 feet 4 inches tall and has Clark Kent's jaw. All that’s left is for David Corenswet to prove he’s ready to play comic books’ greatest hero. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out if he does.
