The Marvel Cinematic Universe has never felt so full of possibilities. After resetting the board due to the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios' juggernaut franchise had the opportunity to tell a new story, so it went ahead with what is probably the most ambitious one ever told on film: The Multiverse Saga.

Connecting the MCU to its next phase was challenging enough, but to countless other worlds; well that's just unbelievable. But it won't stop Marvel from pulling it off, as it's already featured a multitude of cameos and returns that range from fan-castings-come-to-life to beloved characters from other studios' classic Marvel movies making appearances.

That said, according to a number of new reports, the studio could be about to take on its most ambitious test of all by potentially greenlighting the crossover movie that the world has been waiting to see for decades.

An Avengers vs. X-Men movie might actually happen in the MCU

A recent report from The Streamr discusses which movies and Disney Plus shows Marvel Studios will spotlight during San Diego Comic-Con, placing the focus on the already-confirmed upcoming projects. However, it also discussed the possibility of the studio confirming long-rumored projects such as the Midnight Suns movie, the Young Avengers project, the Scarlet Witch movie, and the Avengers vs. X-Men project. As Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy is rumored to be directing another Marvel movie in the future, some outlets have speculated that the latter could be one of the options he has been presented with.

While that on its own certainly isn't a confirmation that any of those projects will happen, Marvel insider Alex Perez (a.k.a. AlexFromCC) quoted a post he published earlier this year for The Cosmic Circus, which details how an X-Men vs. Avengers project could be adapted in the MCU. The post has sent fans into meltdown, with many of them assuming that it's a confirmation, while others were intrigued by the potential teaser post. When one fan asked the scooper if the movie was "actually in the works" or if he "just giving ideas", Perez responded with: "Everything I write has a purpose. And I’m going to leave it at that."

The prospect of an Avengers vs. X-Men movie is so incredibly exciting because the two teams of heroes are so iconic. Moreover, both the Avengers and X-Men movie franchises were so lucrative for their respective studios, so the idea of them coming together for one major crossover movie is almost too good to be true. And yet, it seems like a real possibility... now more than ever.

As for when this could even happen, the running theory is that it might end up replacing one of the originally planned Avengers movies. The upcoming fifth Avengers movie was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty but after Marvel parted ways with actor Jonathan Majors, rumors have been rampant about the franchise going in a different direction, further away from Kang. And even though Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to bring the Multiverse Saga to a close, recent rumors suggest that it will get a title change too. With that in mind, could one of these two projects evolve into the crossover film?

Here's the thing: The arrival of Mutants in the MCU has been far more prominent in the Multiverse Saga than Kang, so it wouldn't be too surprising if Marvel leans on that going forward. It all started in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with a cameo from Patrick Stewart's Professor Charles Xavier and expanded from there, with the arrivals of Namor (a.k.a the first Mutant), and Kamala Khan's discovery of her potential mutant gene all setting the stage nicely for Wolverine's arrival in Deadpool and Wolverine.

Kevin Feige confirmed that the era of the mutants has begun, so it's really quite possible that The Avengers would end up crossing paths with them pretty quickly, especially if they are from another earth. Perhaps that was Kang's plan all along; to have the two teams oppose each other and manipulate each one with the idea that the other is the enemy. And that could allow the film to serve as Avengers 5 and ultimately set the stage for the two teams to unite in Avengers: Secret Wars.

These reports aren't confirmation that the Avengers vs. X-Men project will happen, but given the growing importance of the Mutants in the MCU and the reshaping of Avengers 5 (and maybe even Avengers 6), there is still quite the possibility that this might happen at some point. It could certainly break box office records (and the internet) if it happened, that's for sure!
