Marvel bringing back unexpected "classic" characters for new project, reports say
With San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner, fans of Marvel Studios are ready for some big announcements that will no doubt change the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the foreseeable future. Heck, Deadpool and Wolverine might have already done that, as the crossover MCU movie brought two of the most beloved Marvel Comics characters into the franchise for the first time.
That's what Phases Four and Five (and Six) are all about, and we have been introduced to a number of new characters throughout the Multiverse Saga, particularly through the Disney Plus streaming shows. But while characters such as Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau have already made their returns, there have been question marks around others, especially those that appeared in a particular one-off.
However, a new rumor suggests that those question marks could be about to meet a definitive answer.
Werewolf by Night characters will reportedly appear in rumored Midnight Sons project
According to Marvel insider Daniel Richtman, the long-rumored Midnight Sons project will bring back all of the core characters from Disney Plus' Werewolf by Night special presentation. While it doesn't say which characters in particular, this does suggest that Jack Russell (
Gael García Bernal), Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) and Ted / Man-Thing (Carey Jones) will be back on our screens at some point in the not-too-distant future.
This is a pretty big deal, as it may confirm that there is life in these characters after the credits of the special rolled. With Marvel Studios taking a step back from Special Presentations (temporarily it seems as another is seemingly in the works), there was uncertainty as to what the future might hold for the characters involved in the Halloween streaming movie. That is, until now.
Werewolf by Night was the first ever Disney Plus Special Presentation from Marvel Studios, and that's not the only first it was for the franchise; it was also the MCU's first foray into the world of horror, and it pulled it off remarkably well, with the whole thing coming off like a classic horror movie / creature feature from the 1950s. It premiered on the streamer at Halloween in 2022 and received praise for its decision to opt for practical effects over CGI and its vintage black and white cinematography (it also received a color rerelease soon afterwards). It was a unique approach that almost made it hard to believe it took place in the MCU, but it worked extremely well.
The Midnight Sons project has been rumored for a long time (with recent rumors suggesting Kevin Feige could announce it at Comic-Con), and it's expected to introduce more supernatural characters into the MCU like Ghost Rider, and perhaps even Blade (who is set to headline his own movie starring Mahershala Ali). Other characters rumored to appear are Wong, and Moon Knight. And the thing that makes this new rumor about the Werewolf by Night characters appearing in it too all the more feasible is that all three of them were members of the team at one point or another in the comics (along with other characters such as Morbius, Doctor Strange and even the Scarlet Witch).
It would make sense for the Werewolf by Night trio to appear in the Midnight Sons project given their supernatural connections, but we'll have to wait and see when - or if - Marvel announces the project first. Then, sometimes after that, they might reveal which characters exactly could make their presence felt in the project (and if it will be a movie or Disney Plus series).
Either way, the more appearances from the Werewolf by Night cast and characters, the better!
