Every generation has comic book creators that change how we look at characters and stories. Writers like Geoff Johns (Green Lantern) and Chris Claremont (The Dark Phoenix Saga) and artists John Romita Sr. and Todd McFarlane (both were on The Amazing Spider-Man) helped mold the comic book industry.

Recently, Marvel announced that soon-to-be classic creators Greg Capullo (Batman) and Jonathan Hickman (House of X and Powers of X) are taking on "The best there is at what he does." That’s right. Wolverine is their next project.

Fans are understandably excited, and so is Capullo as he told Polygon:

""I’ve finally returned home to Marvel, and I’m ready to raise some Hell. And, who better to do that with than the Hitman Hickman?""

Greg Capullo

Jonathan Hickman is why the X-Men have been one of the most popular comic series of the last five years. The creation of the Krakoan age was the first of its kind for Marvel. Meanwhile, during DC Comics' New 52, Greg Capullo’s art helped ensured Batman had a classic run; while some of the New 52 comics weren't well received, Batman thrived. Together, this duo will take Wolverine to all new heights in the five-part mini-series, Wolverine: Revenge.

Hickman is also excited about the project, commenting:

" "When we first talked about the project, our number one concern was taking the readers on a high-octane, no-hold-barred Wolverine story that was a proper celebration of both the character and Greg returning to Marvel. And like he [Capullo] said, the bosses cut us loose and the result is an absolutely wild book. Honestly can’t wait for everyone to get to check it out.""

So far, there’s no news on what the mini-series will be about. However, the Wolverine: Revenge saga will also have Red Band editions, which will include exclusive and more violent content. Like most Wolverine stories, fans can expect a lot of violence and blood in this one. But it will be more than just that; Hickman’s style always has thought-provoking stories, so with Logan’s past, he will have a field day. It wouldn’t be surprising if he added something new to Wolverine's mysterious and traumatic past.

As for Greg Capullo, his art is perfect for a Logan tale. He draws brutal fight scenes like no one else. Logan will look a mess after his healing factor is put to the test. On the cover, Wolverine's in the maw of a dinosaur. That’s only the cover art. Imagine what the interior will look like. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out what Hickman and Capullo have in store.

The Wolverine: Revenge is scheduled to be released on August 21, 2024.
