Marvel sneakily announces the death of Spider-Man

Marvel Comics will continue the trend of Spider-Man overcoming the odds in their newest title "Eight Deaths of Spider-Man". It all starts in a Moon Knight story.

It sounds like Moon Knight's most recent adventures have paved the way for a harrowing Spider-Man tale.

Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu No. 0 was mostly about Marc Spector and the people who work for the Midnight Mission. Unlike most recap comic books, Jed MacKay does a masterful job of making this interesting. He didn’t just break down the characters; he had Khonshu explain who they are, what they mean to Marc Spector, and how he feels about them. Khonshu ends his thoughts wondering how he’ll “touch their drama” now that he’s free. While that was the conclusion of one story, it wasn’t the end of the comic book.

Hopefully, you read beyond the Mission Control part of the Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu No. 0. If not, you missed Khonshu furiously talking to the god Cyttorak about a grievance. A pact was made and Cyttorak didn’t hold up his end, as he left the Moon God trapped in Asgard (this happened during Avengers: Age of Khonshu). Khonshu was lucky that Hunter's Moon and Tigra got Wrecker to release him (Blood Hunt No. 4).

The deity didn’t budge while Khonshu berated and physically attacked him. After Khonshu asks what would happen to his children, Cyttorak acknowledges the much smaller god. Even then, Cyttorak only looks at him and says nothing. Khonshu responds snarkily and says they’ll talk later in more “Equitable surroundings.”

You’re probably wondering what any of this has to do with Spider-Man. During the gods’ conversation, the narrator talks about magic being a science that isn’t understood yet. We learn that the narrator is Spider-Man (Peter Parker) talking to Spider-Boy (Bailey Briggs).

Marvel announces The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man

During his appearance in Moon Knight, Peter says that a blood moon isn't magical. Readers know differently. Khonshu's interaction with Cyttorak creates this current blood moon. Bailey asks what Peter would do if it were something magical, but he brushes it off saying that someone like Dr. Strange or Clea would handle it. It looks like that isn’t true, as Marvel ends this comic book with, “Spider-Man will return… and die in The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man.”

Comic Book Resources reports that once Zeb Wells’ run of Amazing Spider-Man ends, Joe Kelly (Deadpool) and Justina Ireland (New York Times Bestseller and multiple Star Wars stories) will write The Eight Deaths of Spider-Man with art by Ed McGuinness, Gleb Melnikov, and more.

If the title is literal, Spider-Man will physically die eight times. At the very least readers could see eight metaphorical deaths. Maybe the eight Spider-Man deaths aren't just Peter Parker. He's far from the only Spider-Man in the multiverse and not the only one on Earth-616. Either way, it sounds like Spidey fans are going to be in for an emotional rollercoaster with this one.
