Marvel teases the return of the Dark Scarlet Witch
By Mark Lynch
Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, has flexed her powers in the pages of Marvel Comics over the last year. Writer Steve Orlando promised we'd see the most powerful version of the Scarlet Witch and he didn't disappoint. This is after she consumed both the Darkhold and Chthon. Wanda did this to keep them away from anyone who would use their power for evil. It’s a smart move that came with consequences.
Wanda is powerful enough to control the Darkhold and Chthon. The problem comes when she has to release the power to protect herself. This happened During Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver No. 2. It unleashed a darker and forgotten side of Wanda. According to Marvel.com, this isn't the last time an evil version of the Scarlet Witch will surface. Her darker, malevolent variant Lore returns in Scarlet Witch No. 3. Marvel states:
"Teaming up with X-MEN RED’s Jacopo Camagni, Orlando will use SCARLET WITCH to continue to push the limits of what Wanda’s magic is capable of as she becomes the Marvel Universe’s prime defender against deadly mystical threats—new and old! Among them will be Lore, Wanda’s demonic counterpart from 1994’s SCARLET WITCH limited series."
During Steve Orlando’s run, Wanda has saved people all over the galaxy, she has beaten Loki in a duel of honesty, and she even ventured into the land of The Wizard of Oz. She’s also fighting with the Wizard (see Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver for more on that). Wanda is probably exhausted at this point. But still, she persists, and now she has to fight an evil variant of herself without regard for innocent people.
This will be her toughest challenge. She’ll have to use tricks Lore won't see coming to defeat her. Unfortunately, Lore may know more than Wanda and she certainly isn't scared to take things to a dangerous level. Even if this fight is over in one issue, it probably won’t be the last time Lore appears in Steve Orlando’s Scarlet Witch.
Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out when that happens.
Scarlet Witch No. 3 is scheduled to be released on August 21, 2024. It will written by Steve Orlando with art by Jacopo Camagni and Russell Dauterman.
