Marvel shows will reportedly return for second seasons; but it's not all good news

It sounds like some of the MCU's classic Disney Plus shows could return for new seasons, but there is sure to be some bittersweet feelings for Marvel fans.

Ever since Marvel Studios launched Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the franchise landscape has changed exponentially. It hasn't always been for the better, but it has been a lot bigger, with the biggest change being the introduction of the Disney Plus shows.

The MCU Disney Plus shows produced a lot of highs for the franchise, including the Emmy-winning WandaVision, the record-breaking Loki, and the game-changing Moon Knight, but there were also some lows, such as the critically-reviled Secret Invasion.

It's been years since some of those shows streamed and fans are still holding out hope that some of them will return for sophomore seasons. Some will have their stories continue in various spinoffs (the story that began in WandaVision will continue through Agatha All Along and Vision Quest) but there are rumors of some direct sequel seasons for others, too.

The good news is that it sounds like at least some of those rumors are about to come true.

Some Marvel shows will return, others have reportedly been shelved

Marvel insider Alex Perez recently discussed the future of the Marvel Studios Disney Plus shows and made some promising comments about the potential of some second seasons. During the scooper's August Q&A with fans, they answered a question about whether the "rumoured season 2s of the Disney+ shows" are still happening, to which they responded: "Some are still happening and others are shelved."

Though Perez didn't outright reveal which shows were in the renewed or cancelled pile, they did answer a separate question about whether there was any traction on a potential Moon Knight season 2 or a Midnight Sons project (which is rumored to feature Moon Knight), saying: "There has been some traction, yes".

This seems to confirm a number of the rumors that have been swirling over the past couple of months. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the studio would be focusing less on commissioning new shows and more on turning some of its miniseries into proper multi-season TV shows; meaning that second seasons would be inevitable. Shortly after that, rumors suggested that Hawkeye had been quietly renewed, while those Moon Knight season 2 rumors resurfaced too, with multiple reports claiming that those two are the most likely to return for new seasons.

A separate report subsequently claimed that Marvel was considering renewing Ms. Marvel for a second season too. That show was one of the MCU's most-acclaimed Disney Plus offerings, but after its title character was involved in the box office failure The Marvels fans began to question whether the character would return. But the truth is that she will return - as she should - and there is a strong chance that it could be in a second season of the series, which did prove to be popular among MCU fans and could easily have a sophomore outing.

The one show that isn't likely to return, however, is She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. Earlier this year, star Tatiana Maslany made some comments that suggested a second season was unlikely due to the budget that the series required, while subsequent rumors have suggested that it will be one of the projects that Marvel leaves on the shelf (for now, at least).

It's a shame because She-Hulk adopted the sitcom format extremely well, which would have made it one of the most logical shows to renew, but given how much CGI it would require, Marvel may opt against it in their "less risk-taking" era.

We already know that Daredevil: Born Again will return for a second season, making it just the third Marvel Studios MCU TV series to have a confirmed sophomore outing after Loki, and What If...? (and fourth if you include the series of shorts I Am Groot). However, it will be interesting to see if any of that original class of Marvel Disney Plus shows join it; it certainly sounds like at least two of them will at some point!
