Marvel's initial wave of Disney Plus shows presented fans with a myriad of Marvel Cinematic Universe characters to enjoy on the small screen. From WandaVision to Hawkeye, 2021 proved to be an exciting year for the franchise as it proved that the saga was right at home on television too. The second wave kicked off in a pretty promising fashion too, with Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law all entertaining audiences throughout 2022.

The unfortunate thing with Marvel's TV shows is that you never really know if they will return for a second season or not. All of them function nicely as miniseries, but they tend to leave fans wanting more, with the 6-8 episode count not exactly being enough for veteran TV watchers. Loki and What If...? returned for second seasons (with the latter due to return for a third, too), while others such as WandaVision were only ever envisioned as one-and-done limited series. But what about the rest?

While there have been varying reports about the future of multiple of those shows, it sounds like one will return at some point. The most recent report appears to confirm as much.

Moon Knight season 2 will reportedly be announced at D23

According to a recent report from Marvel insider HolyField News, Moon Knight will return for a second season, with the studio likely to announce the renewal at D23 in August. The post also claims that Jake Lockley will be the primary personality that Oscar Isaac would play this season as the character would cross paths with multiple villains such as Kang the Conqueror and Mephisto.

That's a lot to digest for sure, and it would make Moon Knight season 2 one of the most pivotal titles in the Multiverse Saga if true, so it sounds almost too good to be true. However, there are two elements that make this rumor rather credible; the first is the reference to Jake Lockley. If you've seen the first season of the show, you'll know that Marc Spector and Steven Grant shared the Moon Knight mantle (with Steven's version manifesting as Mr. Knight), which left fans wondering about his third personality: Jake Lockley. Well, the more malevolent personality made his presence felt in the post-credits scene of the season as Khonshu now relied on him to take the wheel, seemingly setting up a second season. Naturally, viewers assumed Jake would return in that second season and play a major role, but Marvel has not announced anything in the two years since it aired.

The other element that gives this rumor some extra weight is that Moon Knight season 2 has been heavily rumored in those two years. While other shows such as She-Hulk have had pretty disheartening updates from the cast in terms of whether it could return for another outing, all of the reports on Moon Knight's future have been pretty positive, with the likelihood of his return being more "when" than "if".

Even Oscar Isaac himself opened up on the possibility of a second season, revealing to ComicBook.com that he and Marvel have been "talking about it" and that the conversations have been "pleasant". So it does sound like it could be on the cards, and with the studio expected to make some big announcements at D23 this year, there is a strong possibility that Moon Knight season 2 could be among them.

As for why it has taken so long, that could be down to the MCU story needing to reach a certain place before it could happen.

The second season of Moon Knight rumored to feature more MCU characters

The rumors of Moon Knight season 2 have been consistent over the past two years, but there is a reason why they have gathered steam once again in recent weeks. HolyField News' initial report certainly caught fans' attention but now they have added to it, revealing that the character of Bushman is expected to play a major role in the first half of the season.

Bushman is a Marvel Comics regular who often serves as the archenemy of Moon Knight in the source material. That obviously makes him a likely choice for the series, but it's who is reportedly playing him that could explain why the second season has taken so long to come to fruition.

According to rumors, Giancarlo Esposito is set to bring the character to life in the MCU. The legendary actor has recently joined the franchise in a mystery role and he will be making his first big appearance in Captain America: Brave New World next year. This might explain why Marvel has yet to confirm who he's playing, because the confirmation of Moon Knight's archenemy in the MCU might as well confirm that the show would inevitably return for a second season.

Another point of interest is that the initial report also claims that the sophomore outing of Moon Knight would set up that long-rumored Midnight Sons project. Another major character associated with the Midnight Sons is Ghost Rider, who is expected to make his MCU debut in the near-future with an announcement also rumored to be coming at D23.

If Moon Knight season 2 does happen, it has the potential to be one of the most pivotal titles in the whole Multiverse Saga, especially if it ends up featuring Kang, the illusive Mephisto, the long-awaited Ghost Rider, and Giancarlo Esposito's villain, who is expected to become a major factor of the MCU going forward. If this turns out to be the case, it would form a significant connection between Moon Knight and the rest of the MCU, which would be pretty ironic considering the first season was renowned for not featuring any connections to the wider shared universe.

We'll have to wait and see if any of these rumors turn out to be true, but there is a possibility that the Fist of Khonshu could return given how the buzz surrounding a potential second season of Moon Knight is still so positive after all these years. One thing is for sure though: We'll all be eagerly awaiting D23 to see if these - or any other - announcements are made.
