Black Canary

Whatever happened to the Black Canary movie? You know, the Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) spinoff that has been in development since the release of the 2020 movie. The one that was set to star Jurnee Smollett, reprising her role as Dinah Laurel Lance from that movie. Unfortunately, that's all we still really know about it four years on.

The movie's fate was instantly thrown into question after the Warner Bros. Discovery merger led to the near-immediate cancellation of the already-completed Batgirl movie. That film, along with the also-completed Blue Beetle and Black Canary were all set to release exclusively on WarnerMedia streaming service Max, but after Batgirl's cancellation, Blue Beetle was released theatrically (where it underperformed). There has been no update on Black Canary since.

In fact, the most recent updates on the movie came in mid 2022 when Misha Green confirmed she was working on the script. That was before Batgirl's cancellation, but even after that, a Warner Bros. spokesperson confirmed to TVLine that the movie was still in development for the HBO Max streaming service. And yet, there have been no updates on it since.

The real worrying thing here is the fact that James Gunn and Peter Safran have since announced their own vision for the DC Universe. The new DC Studios bosses are crafting a new shared universe out of the remnants of the old DCEU (in which Black Canary was a part of), announcing a slate of movies that the streaming movie is not part of. So, has it been scrapped?

The promising thing here is that some aspects of the original DCEU will still exist. Gunn's own Peacemaker will return for a second season, meaning that a bunch of DCEU characters will return. As John Cena's Peacemaker interacted with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, who became an ally of Black Canary, there is a chance that the DC hero still exists in this world.

That said, fans aren't optimistic that the movie will go ahead now that Gunn and Safran have their own separate vision for what the DC Universe should look like. And that's a darn shame, as Smollett's Black Canary was one of the most intriguing characters that the DCEU never made the most of.
