10 new comic books to watch out for this week (July 17)
By Mark Lynch
According to comicbook.com, after years of tradition, DC comic books will be released on Wednesdays instead of Tuesdays. This started on July 3 with comics like Absolute Power No. 1. For now, this will be the new standard.
This is good news if you’re a Marvel, Image, and DC Comics fan. All of the new comic books will be published on the same day. Now, to make your life even easier. If you don't know which comics to purchase, these are the ten must-read new issues releasing July 17 according to ComiXology.
Wonder Woman No. 11
- Writer: Tom King
- Artist: Daniel Sampere
As if the mental and physical battle of the Sovereign wasn’t bad enough, Wonder Woman’s powers have been stolen (Absolute Power No. 1). It’s up to Justice League Dark to save her. However, did Task Force VII steal their ability to wield magic?
Superman No. 16
- Writer: Joshua Williamson
- Artist: Jamal Campbell
If you think something like being powerless will stop Superman, you don’t know the Man of Steel. Superman will venture somewhere he wouldn’t dare if he had his abilities. He’s going to the Magic Realm.
While that’s happening, will Amanda Waller discover that the remaining heroes are hiding in the Fortress of Solitude? During the Absolute Power trailer, the Fortress of Solitude is on fire and Superman is flying (this happens at the 46-second mark). He may return with some abilities and a burning home.
Plus, this is the return of the amazing artist, Jamal Campbell to Joshua Williamson’s Superman. He’s back right on time for this DC Comics crossover.
Titans No. 13
- Writer: Tom Taylor
- Artist: Chris Samnee
Titans No. 12 ends with Evil Raven learning she can’t link to Dick Grayson’s mind and attacking him. That may not seem important since she’s working with her father (Trigon), but she started to develop an understanding of the Titans. Will Evil Raven learn what she’s doing is wrong or will the true Raven escape and help her friends?
Phoenix No. 1
- Writer: Stephanie Phillips
- Artist: Yasmine Putri
During X-Men: Fall of X, Jean Grey and the Phoenix came to an understanding. Now they’ll travel the universe to save lives. Their first mission as "teammates" will involve an S.O.S. from the Nova Corps about a black hole threatening hundreds of lives.
Destro No. 2
- Writer: Dan Watters
- Artists: Andrei Bressan, Adriano Lucas
Everyone loves a villain and Destro is no different. However, the difference is the Energon Universe has shown a war between the villains. In this case, Cobra Commander and Destro. They’re working together on paper, but they have their agendas.
Nightwing No. 116
- Writer: Tom Taylor
- Artist: Bruno Redondo
Heartless continues to wreck Dick Grayson’s life. After being framed for murder, (Nightwing No. 115) we’ll see how Dick leaves Bludhaven. If the cover is a clue to what’s going on, Deadman will be involved and probably the reason Nightwing learns to fly again.
Iron Man No. 20
- Writer: Gerry Duggan
- Artist: Andrea Di Vito
What’s next for Emma Frost and Tony Stark? The war against Orchis and Nimrod is over and Tony isn’t married to Emma. It’s doubtful since Tony hinted at their break-up in the previous issue. However, it would be nice to be wrong.
Ultimate X-Men No. 5
PICK OF THE WEEK!
- Writer: Peach MoMoKo
- Artist: Peach MoMoKo
ComiXology reports, "The shadow who has been haunting Armor finally reveals his true face." A good guess is that it's the Ultimate Universe's version of Amahl Farouk (Shadow King). However, this isn't Universe-616. It could be Jean Grey, Mr. Sinister, or Apocalypse. Magik, or dozens of other mutants.
Namor No. 1
- Writer: Jason Aaron
- Artist: Paul Davidson
You don’t need more to know that it’s Jason Aaron writing a story about Namor. He did a great job with the former King of Atlantis during his run of Avengers. But, let's add to the reasons to grab this title. There’s an underwater war coming (this likely started in Giant-Size Fantastic Four) and Elder Whales. I don't know what Elder Whales are, but who wouldn't want to see them?
Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter No. 1
- Writer: Tom Taylor
- Artist: Jay Kristoff
Dark Knights of Steel is another of DC’s best Elseworld stories. Now they're following it up with Deathstroke as a Viking, maybe even Odin.
Before you read this, this writer recommends reading the previous 12 issues. They’re a fun read with interesting takes on the characters you know.
