If you were hoping to be able to enjoy new episodes of One Piece this year, we regret to inform you that the wait for season 2 is going to be a long one.

Deadline has confirmed One Piece is among the many Netflix Originals that will not be coming back for a new season in 2024, meaning the earliest the second season could be coming will be 2025. Yes, we said 2025. Disappointing as this might be, it's honestly not too surprising.

Filming on season 2 has yet to begin and will take several months. The show then requires a number of special effects with extensive VFX needed to bring the show to life. Given cameras haven't even started rolling, it's not shocking to know that Netflix won't be able to release a new season in 2024.

The good news is that a second season is in the works and we imagine Netflix will be prioritizing the show. The first season of the show pulled in 37.8 million views within less than two weeks after launching on Netflix, breaking into the Top 10 in 93 countries and claiming the No. 1 spot in the Netflix Top 10 in 46 countries. Audiences quickly made their love for the show known praising the series on social media and on Rotten Tomatoes where the show received a 96% Audience Score making it one of the highest-rated Netflix shows among audiences.

Netflix was quick to renew the show, ordering a second season less than two weeks after One Piece premiered on Aug. 31, 2023, and we imagine Netflix will be hoping to keep the momentum going by avoiding too long of a break between seasons.

Hopefully, One Piece will be able to avoid a Stranger Things type break between seasons as we're eager to see what's next for Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates.
