Robert Downey Jr. isn't the only MCU star returning for Avengers: Doomsday

Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU to lead Avengers: Doomsday but he isn't the only major Marvel star coming back for the movie.

The mystery as to what Avengers 5's new title could be is officially over, but wow did it go out with a bang. At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios took to the iconic Hall H stage to reveal to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe what the movie's new title would be, confirming that it was now Avengers: Doomsday. With that reveal, the audience in attendance went wild; but not nearly as wild as when Robert Downey Jr. stepped forward and unmasked, confirming that he would be playing Doctor Doom in the Multiverse Saga movie.

It was a huge moment in Marvel history that will no doubt be held up as one of its absolute best Comic-Con reveals ever, but it also changes the game as it confirms that Downey is back in the franchise after five years. And it makes full use of the Multiverse Saga concept, as Doctor Doom is not Tony Stark / Iron Man - the hero he had portrayed since 2008 in the MCU.

However, as groundbreaking as that reveal was, he's not the only MCU star that will return for Avengers: Doomsday.

The Fantastic Four will return in Avengers: Doomsday

While the world is still reeling from the reveal that Robert Downey Jr. is set to be the villain of the next two Avengers movies, that wasn't the only announcement at SDCC about Avengers: Doomsday. No, it was also revealed that the Russo Brothers, who directed both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, will return to direct both that movie and its 2027 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars. But that's not all, either.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also announced that the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps would reprise their roles in both upcoming Avengers movies, meaning that audiences can expect to see Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn's Johnny Storm / Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach's Ben Grimm / The Thing return after their own cinematic debut much sooner than expected. He also added that some of the heroes featured in Thunderbolts* would return in those films as well.

If that doesn't already sound star-studded enough, Benedict Cumberbatch recently confirmed during an interview with Netflix that he would be returning to the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year to begin shooting the next Avengers movie, confirming that we will see Doctor Strange make his presence felt in the movie too.

I don't know about you, but Avengers: Doomsday sounds like it's going to be one heck of an adventure to me, and that's before the rest of the cast are announced. With rumors continuing to swirl about the new Captain America, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) possibly having roles in it too, the sky is the limit for this one.

Robert Downey Jr. returning to lead the film is one (incredible) thing, but this is shaping up to be one star-studded movie, that's for sure!
