Michael Rosenbaum, who played the beloved villain Lex Luthor in Smallville, has hinted at exciting developments in the world for an upcoming animated sequel. Fans are eagerly anticipating more details as “Albie,” Rosenbaum himself, teases the progress being made behind the scenes.

At the 2024 Nashville Comicon event, Rosenbaum revealed some cool updates regarding the sequel to Smallville in animation at a panel moderated by Comicbook. He stated that “some loose animation” had been produced for a pitch at some point. Not only that, but the creators [Alfred Gough and Miles Millar] are helming the series.

Highlighting the fact that, with showbiz, it’s all to do with timing, the actor and podcaster who topped TV Guide’s 2013 list of “The 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time” and for playing the Martinex in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies had this to say during the event:

“Tom and I are working on a Smallville animated series that we’re trying to get made. It’s gonna take time. But the creators of Smallville are attached, they want to be a part of it. And we, you know, when it’s the right time, we’ll pitch it. You know, we’re working on it and we have some loose animation that we’ve worked [on] with someone who was just awesome. It looks great. So if we can get that made, that’d be awesome.”

In recent years, we have seen a resurgence of great TV shows getting a continuation, ala X-Men '97. Even the upcoming Batman: Caped Crusader is debatably a spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series. So, now more than ever is the right time for Smallville to soar from the Kent Farm to Metropolis and beyond in animated form.

Now, whether Rosenbaum and his ol' buddy, DC Studios co-CEO and co-chairman James Gunn, will give it the green light is another story. At the end of the day, what starts is a great script, not just in pitch form.
