Stranger Things deaths in order: Every major character who died throughout the seasons

Stranger Things has become one of Netflix's top series since it premiered in 2019. Throughout the four seasons, many deaths have occurred, including some main characters fans were sorry to see depart the series. But as with any sci-fi theme movie or show, deaths are inevitable, and the final season will likely see more.

Stranger Things season 1 main character deaths

The first season of Stranger Things was a fantastic opening to showcase what this show would entail. The 80s nostalgia alone drew many viewers, but the fantastic storyline and stellar cast made it worth the watch.

In season one, Barbara Holland (Shannon Purser) was introduced as Nancy Wheeler's (Natalia Dyer) best friend. Barb mysteriously vanished and would later be discovered to have been abducted and killed by The Demogorgon in the Upside Down. Barb's parents never gave up hope of finding her alive until the truth was revealed about Hawkins Lab, and then they were finally able to put their daughter to rest.

The Demogorgon originated in the parallel universe known as the Upside Down. This being could transport between the two dimensions and abduct people at will. His known victims were Barb, Dale, and Henry, as well as Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), who was rescued. The Demogorgon was killed by Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), known as El, a child with special psychokinetic abilities, who incinerated the monster at Hawkins Middle School.

Stranger Things season 2 main character deaths

Mews, Dustin Henderson's (Gaten Matarazzo) cat, was killed in the second season. Dustin found a baby mind flayer, which he named D'Artagnan, and kept as a pet. The being grew rapidly, which increased his appetite from Snickers bars to eventually eating Mews, the cat.

One of the most heartbreaking deaths in Stranger Things is that of Bob Newby, portrayed by Sean Austin, an 80s favorite. Bob was a jovial man who just wanted to make others as happy as he was. While trying to protect his loved ones inside Hawkins Lab, Bob believes himself clear of danger when a Demodog lurches at him from the side. He is then mauled by a pack of the Demodogs.

Stranger Things season 3 main character deaths

Alexei (Alec Utgoff) wasn't exactly a main character, but he was a fan favorite for the brief time he appeared. He was a Russian captured by Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce (Winona Ryder), who had been working to reopen the gate to the Upside Down. While not helpful at first, he eventually aided Hopper, Joyce, and Murray (Brett Gelman) and was killed by the Russian named Grigori (Andrey Ivchenko) for partnering with the Americans.

Despite being a bully, eye candy Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery) was a fan-favorite who met his demise in season 3. Step-Brother to Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), Billy was horrible to his sister and her friends. In season three he would become a pawn for the Mind Flayer who used him to collect residents of Hawkins to creat the Spider Monster. Billy was never melded into the Spider Monster and displayed some superhuman abilities. At the end of his life, Eleven was able to reach him by reminding him of his childhood. This prompted him to defend his sister and her friends against the Mind Flayer, who killed him by stabbing its tentacles into his body until he died.

Stranger Things season 4 main character deaths

Dr. Martin Brenner, or Papa (Matthew Modine), appeared in the first and fourth seasons with a guest appearance in season 2 and was the scientist who enabled Eleven and the other children to tap into dangerous psychokinetic abilities. After he successfully restored Eleven's abilities in season 4, he wanted to push her to do more, but she opted to return to Hawkins. Brenner then took over the facility and held her captive until the US Military arrived, fatally wounding Brenner. He died alone in the Nevada desert.

In season 4, wild card Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) was introduced as the leader of the Hellfire Club, a Dungeons & Dragons group. He quickly became a fan favorite, and when he used the power of metal music, Metallica's "Master of Puppets," to save the others, he became even more popular. Sadly, Eddie was killed during his heroic move.
