The Last of Us season 2 has officially finished filming ahead of show’s 2025 return

We’re officially one step closer to The Last of Us season 2 reaching our screens! 

After months of filming across Canada, production has finally wrapped on the second season of HBO’s Emmy-winning drama. The end of filming was confirmed on Twitter by film editor Timothy Good, who revealed that filming has wrapped on season 2 and congratulated the team behind the series as the show prepares to enter post-production. 

“Wrapped! Congratulations to the incredible production crew of The Last of Us season 2. We will bring your hard work home now!” Good tweeted on August 19 celebrating the end of filming. 

Now that filming is complete, the show will enter post-production as the creative team works to bring the show’s stunning visual effects to life and puts the finishing touches on the second season. We still don’t know when season 2 will be arriving on HBO, but we do know season 2 is coming in 2025 and with filming complete the show is on schedule for its return next year. 

The Last of Us release date remains a mystery, but could it arrive in January 2025?

HBO is keeping fans in the dark regarding its plans for when The Last of Us will return for its second season, but we have to wonder whether HBO could be looking to once again release the show within the first quarter of the year as its first major release of 2025. 

As fans will recall, season 1 kicked off on January 15, 2023, and the show ran through early March giving HBO a successful hit series in the first quarter of the year. This is a time when many shows tend to still be on break following the holiday season and the show thrived airing on Sunday nights in the early months of the year becoming a verifiable hit for the network. 

Given the success HBO saw with a January release for the series, it would seem likely the network would like to try to set the show up for success again by bringing it back around the same time of year season 1 was released. We know that HBO tends to keep to seasonal patterns such as how both seasons of House of the Dragon were released in early summer, so it seems likely that The Last of Us season 2 could be coming in January 2025. 

It also should be noted that of the HBO shows coming back in 2025, The Last of Us is the only series that has previously been released in the first quarter of the year with other returnees such as The White Lotus and Just Like That, typically serving as summer and fall series. There’s also the fact that 2025 will bring another Game of Thrones spinoff and summer has typically been HBO’s go-to premiere slot for that franchise, so it would make sense for HBO to kick off the year with The Last of Us. 

Of course, this is all speculation, but given filming has wrapped on season 2 and the show is entering post-production before September, the new season should be complete and ready to air by early 2025 and we’d be shocked if HBO didn’t kick off its 2025 scripted slate with its breakout hit!
