The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3 is happening; fourth possibly in the works too

The world of the The Walking Dead has reached new and expansive heights ever since the conclusion of the original series. The Walking Dead ended after its eleventh season back in 2022, but it has since spawned multiple cinematic six-episode spinoffs focused on some of the show's most beloved characters.

Daryl Dixon was at the center of one of them, with Norman Reedus reprising his role as the broody but lovable survivor headed to France to look for others. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon was acclaimed for its compelling narrative, strong performances, and beautiful cinematography, which opened the TWD Universe up in ways that we hadn't seen before.

The show returns in a new form for its second season this September. Subtitled The Book of Carol, it reunites Reedus with longtime Walking Dead costar Melissa McBride, who reprises her role as Carol Peletier. But what's even more exciting is that the second season won't be the end of the journey for the pair.

Norman Reedus confirms that Daryl Dixon season 3 is happening

Norman Reedus has officially confirmed that there will be a third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, while also teasing the possibility of a fourth. Speaking to Radio Times, he revealed that the show will be moving to Spain to begin filming "seasons 3 and possibly 4". He then second-guessed whether he was actually allowed to reveal that.

While his comments don't outright confirm if the show has been renewed for a fourth season, they do imply as much. The AMC and AMC+ series filmed its first two seasons back-to-back, so there is a strong possibility that it will do the same with seasons 3 and 4. There's also just the fact that this revelation finally confirms that the third season is happening after months of speculation.

Last year reports surfaced that AMC would be looking for a new filming location for a potential third season due to signing just a two-year contract to film in France. Earlier this year, a further report revealed that Spain was on the cards as a potential filming location, with production expected to begin this summer. And now that Reedus himself has confirmed it in an interview, we know this to be the case.

Naturally, this suggests that the season 2 finale of Daryl Dixon, which Reedus has described as the greatest hour in Walking Dead television history, will see Daryl, Carol, Laurent, and the rest of the survivors in France depart the country and move further through Europe. If they do indeed decide to leave Paris behind, the show would certainly miss the beauty of the city given how the cinematography brought season 1 to life, but we're excited to see how beautifully Spain will be shot in season 3.

Speaking of Spain, fans are convinced that we might see Rick Grimes' long-lost brother Jeffrey. The character has never appeared in the TV franchise before, but he was introduced in the comics via an offshoot titled The Walking Dead: The Alien, in which it was revealed that he had relocated to Barcelona in Spain. With the TWD Universe finally reintroducing Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes in The Ones Who Live earlier this year, could now be the time for his brother to make his live-action debut?

The TWD Universe lives

What's most exciting about the third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is that it confirms that the TWD Universe will continue beyond its upcoming seasons. After the original series ended, it was closely succeeded in ending by original spinoff series Fear The Walking Dead. New spinoffs Daryl Dixon, Dead City, and The Ones Who Live started a new era for the franchise, but it wasn't clear how long any of them would last.

The Ones Who Live is the most recent of the three but it's also the first of them to conclude, as its conclusion proved that it was always intended to be a limited series. In contrast, Dead City and Daryl Dixon have both been renewed for second seasons, with the former coming out in 2025 and the latter coming out in September. But could these shows go beyond that? Now we know that the answer is yes.

Truthfully, Dead City probably has a bit less of a shelf life due to the fact that it's already revisiting a rivalry from the original series. Maggie and Negan's feud in the new spinoff received a bit of criticism due to the fact that TWD had already explored it in depth before having the pair find some common ground in the series finale. A second season of Dead City does make sense as Maggie may well rescue her enemy to return the favor after he saved her son, but it's not yet clear if a third is on the cards. The thing is: Now we know it's possible.

Daryl Dixon, on the other hand, has the most life left in it due to the fact that its a completely fresh chapter for the universe. Yes, we know Daryl and we know Carol, but the duo have been pulled into a completely new storyline in a completely new location (which we now know will move to an even newer location), so there is more scope for future seasons should AMC wish to continue renewing it.

The point is: The fact that Daryl Dixon will return for a third (and maybe a fourth) season confirms that AMC and AMC+ are not yet done with the TWD Universe. There are more stories to be told from these characters (like the Chief Content Officer of the TWD Universe Scott Gimple previously suggested), and right now that's through future seasons of these established shows, but perhaps in the future, there could be more spinoffs based on other beloved characters. And that's an extremely exciting prospect for us fans of the franchise.
