Nosy neighbor Agnes was actually Agatha Harkness

At the end of WandaVision episode 7, "Breaking the Fourth Wall," it was revealed that Agnes, a recurring character in the sitcom episodes earlier in the season, was actually Agatha Harkness. Originally from Salem in the 17th century, Agatha was a powerful witch who had been attacked by her coven for stealing magic they deemed to be beyond her. When they attempted to punish her, she drained their power instead.

Throughout WandaVision, she had been trying to get close to Wanda to understand how the Hex worked and figure out if she could take her magic as well. Part of that plan included creating the fake version of Pietro played by Evan Peters, who was supposed to figure out Wanda's secret.

Because Wanda herself didn't understand, Agatha had to use a strand of Wanda's hair to walk through her memories, putting together that Wanda was a witch from birth, whose powers had grown after exposure to the Mind Stone. When she lost Vision, Wanda was "forged" into the Scarlet Witch, who wields Chaos magic and is destined to end the world.

Wanda beat Agatha and left her in Westview, cursed back into Agnes

Determined to be the most powerful witch alive, Agatha tried to make a deal with Wanda: her life in Westview, in exchange for her magic. For a time, Wanda seemed to be willing to take the deal, firing her power at Agatha to be absorbed. However, Wanda was actually making runes to keep Agatha from using any of her magic, using the same lesson that Agatha had taught her against her.

Once Agatha was blocked, Wanda took back her power (and possibly some of Agatha's), transforming into the Scarlet Witch. As punishment for trying to steal her magic and hurt her children, Wanda transformed Agatha into Agnes, keeping her a prisoner in her own mind. Agatha protested that someday Wanda would need her, to which Wanda replied that she'd know where to find her if she did.

And with a wave of the Scarlet Witch's hand, Agatha once again became Agnes. But this time, she had no memories of the life she lived before nor any power of her own to wield.

Westview was freed, and Wanda lost everything

Before Agatha and Wanda's fight, Agatha had released everyone from the Scarlet Witch's spell. They confronted her about torturing and controlling them, which led Wanda to attempt to end the spell. However, taking down the Hex would erase Vision and their children, Tommy and Billy Maximoff, from existence.

After she finished dealing with Agatha, Wanda took some time to be with her family. She and Vision tucked the boys into bed, and they all said goodbye. In the meantime, she had been lifting the spell from the rest of town. When it was completely undone, the house, Vision, and the boys were gone.

Spin-off bait galore

While Wanda's story continued in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the rest of the characters were put in place for their own spin-offs.

  • Vision had faced off against a reconstructed version of himself known as the White Vision, eventually helping him access his original memories. That version of Vision flew off to find himself in a future project with the placeholder name Vision Quest.
  • Darcy Lewis, Jimmy Woo, and Monica Rambeau stopped S.W.O.R.D. director Tyler Hayward from attacking Wanda and her family. In the mid-credit scene for the finale, Jimmy was seen taking charge of the cleanup of Westview. While he directed the FBI, Monica was visited by a Skrull inviting her to join Nick Fury in space. This plotline was explored in The Marvels.
  • The rest of town, seemingly, continued on with life as it was before Wanda came to town. Fans can expect to see at least some of those characters in Agatha All Along, although this time they will be shown as their true selves, rather than the characters Wanda made for them.

Billy and Tommy called out to Wanda from the multiverse

In the end-credit scene of the WandaVision finale, viewers got to see what Wanda had been up to since leaving Westview. She was living in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, which at first glance seemed like a peaceful place for her to regroup. However, she had also begun exploring the Darkhold, which has a corruptive power over those who use it.

While reading it in her astral state, Wanda heard both of her children calling out to her for help. This set up the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she used the Darkhold's power to try to cross the multiverse, searching for her children.

Wanda was almost completely corrupted by the Darkhold, fighting against Doctor Strange to kill America Chavez and absorb her ability to move through the multiverse. However, she came to her senses when she saw how much her dark side frightened her alternate self's children, pulling down Wundagore Mountain around her to destroy the Darkhold once and for all.

So far as we know, the version of Wanda Maximoff that fans have been watching since Age of Ultron is now dead. This is a critical plot point for Agatha All Along, because it allows for the possibility of Agatha breaking out of Wanda's spell. However, other versions of the character may still appear in the future, along with other versions of her sons, Billy and Tommy.

The future of the Scarlet Witch and her family will continue to be explored in the many WandaVision spin-offs, with Wanda's return always a possibility. After all, "the only characters who stay dead in comic books are Uncle Ben, Bucky and Jason Todd.” Oh, wait...

Whether or not Wanda returns to the screen, Agatha All Along is sure to be a fun ride, with a brilliant cast and just as many genre twists as its predecessor. Get ready for a spooky, silly, and occasionally scary ride when Agatha returns to Disney+ on September 18.
