Star Wars has made a new home for itself in the world of streaming television over the course of this past decade. One of the biggest franchises in movie history, Lucasfilm's titan took a break from releasing big-budget movies after the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga and that allowed the studio to focus on continuing the stories on the small one instead. Enter The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian debuted on our TV screens in 2019 as Disney Plus' first ever original series. Starring Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin (the titular hero), it tells the story of the lone Mandalorian who is assigned to transport "The Child", a.k.a. Grogu for experimentation. But the warrior ends up bonding with the creature instead, and the two become quite the force to be reckoned with in that galaxy so far, far away.

The Star Wars show has run for three seasons on Disney Plus, but according to a number of reports, it won't return for a fourth. Mando and Grogu will be back in The Mandalorian and Grogu movie, but it appears that the show is officially done.

The Mandalorian and Grogu movie changed the plans for season 4

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Pedro Pascal's beloved Star Wars hero and the character the internet named "Baby Yoda" would be making their cinematic debut in The Mandalorian and Grogu. A new movie from the Star Wars universe, the decision was made to prioritize a standalone film focusing on both characters over a fourth season of their Disney Plus series. But that instantly created a problem, because season 4 had already been greenlit and if the movie proves successful it will likely lead to sequels; so where does season 4 fit in?

That right there is where The Mandalorian and Grogu comes in. It has very much been implied that what was once planned to be the show's fourth season has now become the feature-length movie instead, thus negating the need for a future season of the show. This is something that industry insider Daniel Richtman supports in a recent report, revealing that the movie will serve as the final chapter of the series and that no fourth season will follow it. He does, however, add that we will likely see the characters again in another project, but that it won't be in another season of the series.

The Hollywood Reporter reflects on the show's third season and how it "creatively stumbled a bit", pointing out that its ratings also dipped a little in the midst of receiving some fan backlash over what audiences deemed "a massive drop in quality". Though it doesn't outright say that this was the deciding factor, the report acknowledges that it could have been one of the reasons behind Disney's decision to pivot to a feature film.

It's also worth noting that The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skywalker and, as THR points out, it's curious that it's just a continuation of the most beloved TV series that it launched during those years that there weren't any Star Wars movies. But there may also be a method to this apparent madness.

The Mandalorian and Grogu's release in 2026 may be less about what the show did wrong and more about what it did right; those characters have proven to be among the most popular the Star Wars franchise has ever seen, and with fans' questioning the saga's future on the silver screen, perhaps Lucasfilm and Disney felt that the next best step was to cross those two elements over, bringing its acclaimed television world onto the big screen. It makes sense from that perspective, but it is incredibly frustrating for fans who simply wanted to tune into the show's once-planned fourth season.

So, even though it seems like we've reached the end of The Mandalorian's run as a Disney Plus series, the show was only ended quietly so that Lucasfilm can bring the characters to the big screen instead. Their stories are just beginning, and we can't wait to see what's next for them!
