It is no secret that Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be the most stacked live-action superhero project ever made. The film's cast announcement revealed that over 25 characters are set to come together on the big screen, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirming that there's enough room left for more surprises. Nearly everyone will be present once the multiverse starts to collapse, and the guest list just got a little bit larger.
After missing out on San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Marvel is set to take over its iconic Hall H panel at the 2026 edition of the event. Fans had theorized that the Avengers: Doomsday trailer would be the main highlight of the studio's presentation, but the footage ended up being released sooner than expected. Now, nobody is exactly sure what to expect from the superhero giant.
Fortunately, the SDCC surprises also started ahead of time, as Disney has unveiled a new character set to take over the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Doctor Doom.
Marvel releases a first look at a Latverian Witch set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday
It was rumored for months, and now it is official. Doctor Doom won't be alone in his quest to conquer the multiverse, as he will be accompanied by a Latverian Witch (or perhaps even an entire coven?). The witch's costume was spotted in Marvel's SDCC booth, and the parallels to Doctor Doom are unmistakable. However, there could be more to the character than meets the eye.
Back in April, reliable insider Alex Perez broke the news that Doom will have many followers who don't speak and are "masked with masks that look like the ones from the movie Kingdom of Heaven." According to the report, they won't be random characters either, but rather big heroes like the Scarlet Witch in disguise. The source doubled down on this idea by also revealing that Victor von Doom will have witches by his side in the movie.
The symbols in the witch's attire are also reminiscent of some runes present in the Scarlet Witch's outfit from the end of WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This is an important correlation, especially when we consider two key comic book storylines that could be influential to the plot of Avengers: Doomsday: Avengers: The Children's Crusade and Secret Wars.
In Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars, Doctor Doom steals the power of the Beyonders to create Battleworld—an amalgamation of multiple universes where the villain reigned supreme for a long time. However, audiences won't see a 1-to-1 adaptation of these events in Avengers: Doomsday, mainly because the Beyonders have yet to be introduced in the MCU. So, who else is powerful enough to bend reality to their will? Well, let's just say that Wanda Maximoff was able to hold an entire town captive and force everyone within to live a made-up fantasy. With that in mind, there's a chance that Doom will use the Scarlet Witch's powers to create Battleworld on the big screen.
This theory could also be supported by the events of Avengers: The Children's Crusade, where Doom steals the Life Force from Wanda and is presented with the opportunity to use this power to bend reality to his will. Furthermore, in this same storyline, the Young Avengers desperately look for the Scarlet Witch after her disappearance, only to discover she was in Latveria all along, right next to Doom. Well, a similar scenario could happen in live-action.
For the time being, no one knows what happened to the MCU's version of the Scarlet Witch. Audiences saw her perish during the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and yet Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that we'll see more of her in the future. That begs the question: Where has she been this whole time? Is there a chance she is in a parallel universe, right alongside Victor von Doom and wearing a costume similar to his? Well, the latest Avengers: Doomsday reveal could certainly signal this is the case.
Of course, there's always the chance that the Latverian witch will simply be... a Latverian witch, no secret identities involved. However, Marvel tends to toy with audiences' expectations, and this time could be no different. Fortunately, it won't be long before the studio's Hall H panel gives us some much-needed answers.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
