Prime Video cancels hit superhero series: 'The viewer numbers weren’t there'

In an unsurprising move, Prime Video has cancelled a superhero series from one of its biggest franchises.

While Marvel and DC have long dominated the superhero genre, Prime Video has carved out its own corner of the superhero landscape with help from The Boys and Invincible.

Invincible has become one of the most popular animated superhero titles in the genre, drawing praise from critics and fans alike. Then there is The Boys, which has been praised as one of the greatest superhero series to ever grace the small-screen with help from its chilling social commentary and envelope-pushing storylines. The show has been so successful it’s already spawned two spinoffs with additional spinoffs actively in development which will keep the franchise going even after the flagship series signs off the air with its fifth season in 2026.

Prime Video’s superhero franchises have an incredible future ahead of them; still, it seems there is at least one superhero series from the streaming service that won’t be coming back for another season.

The Boys Presents: Diabolical season 2 not happening as Prime Video cancels show

Although the future of The Boys remains bright, there is one show in the franchise that will not be continuing. Prime Video will not be renewing its animated spinoff The Boys Presents: Diabolical for a second season, with the series canceled after just one season.

The writing has been on the wall for some time now as the show debuted on March 4, 2022, with an eight-episode season; however, Prime Video has remained silent on the show’s fate. That said, The Boys creator Eric Kripke has confirmed fans’ suspicions that Diabolical has been canceled.

In a recent interview with The Wrap, Kripke revealed that there is not going to be a season 2 of Diabolical. While he admitted that both he and showrunner Simon Racioppa would love to do another season, “ultimately the viewer numbers weren’t there to justify a second season.”

Truth be told, if there was any series in The Boys franchise that doesn’t necessarily need another season it’s Diabolical. The series was designed as a series of animated shorts set within the universe of The Boys. It was a fun addition to the franchise, but it’s not really needed to further the franchise in the way that spinoffs such as Gen V are.

Speaking of which, the franchise’s future still looks bright. The Boys season 5 will be coming sometime in 2026, bringing the flagship series to a close with its final season. Then there is Vought Rising, a new prequel series which will expand the franchise in a new way with help from both new and familiar faces. The Boys: Mexico remains in active development and the hope is that Gen V will be returning for a third season following another successful season.

Diabolical may be over, but Prime Video’s investment in The Boys universe doesn’t seem to be wavering.
