To say that Project Hail Mary has taken the world by storm would be an understatement. The Ryan Gosling-led space drama based on Andy Weir's eponymous novel very quickly made an impression on audiences when it debuted in movie theaters this March and, from there, it has continued to ascend to new heights.
There has been real buzz about this movie. It helped that it has a built-in fanbase because of the novel and it helps that Gosling's incredible performance is receiving critical acclaim. But all in all, Project Hail Mary has become a phenomenon that should be seen on the big screen when possible. However, its theatrical success may have stalled it, well, other markets.
Project Hail Mary streaming release date delayed
Project Hail Mary won't be arriving on streaming platforms anytime soon. The critically-acclaimed sci-fi blockbuster has been breaking all kinds of records at the box office, which has resulted in Amazon MGM extending the theatrical release window to allow it to play in theaters for longer.
The film's directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, have been eager for the film to be seen on the big screen, with the latter taking to social media to announce the streaming delay - highlighting the film's theatrical success as the reasoning behind it. Miller specifically said " so it won't be streaming anytime soon" in that announcement, so needless to say it's going to be a while before Ryland Grace flies the Hail Mary onto Prime Video.

Yes, Prime Video will be where the film ultimately calls home due to it being Amazon's streaming service. Normally, the studio's theatrical releases have a 45-day theatrical window but that's not the case here due to Project Hail Mary's box office success. And taking that delay into account, it will probably be well into the summer before the film makes its presence felt on the streaming platform. With that in mind, we're predicting an August / September premiere on Prime Video.
Success isn't an overstatement either. The sci-fi flick debuted to $141 million worldwide, which was above expectations, but it maintained that momentum with low drop-offs in each successive weekend, showing that it actually had legs. And now, close to two months after its March 12 theatrical release, it has grossed a startling $620 million - well above the projected $400 - $500 million that it reportedly needed to make in order to break even. It's currently the third-highest-grossing movie of the year and has shattered records for a non-franchise, non-superhero movie.
Taking all of that into account, we can probably expect the digital release date to be delayed as well. Although some services have listed May 12 as the tentative Project Hail Mary digital release date, Amazon MGM have not officially announced this. And with the movie's continued success in theaters, there is a very good chance that we could be looking at a June release on digital PVOD platforms like Apple TV, Amazon's Prime Video Store, and more.
It's certainly going to be a longer wait for those who want to see the movie and haven't ventured out the movie theaters to watch it, but it's safe to say that the wait will be worth it. Project Hail Mary is a modern day masterpiece that balances the spectacle and stakes of the classic '90s disaster / space movies with the heart and soul of Weir's moving novel. And it deserves every bit of that incredible success that it's experiencing.
