Paramount Plus' School Spirits is closing in on the finale of a fantastic third season. So far, there have been a lot of terrifying developments that could mean the end of the ghosts at Split River High School. But, while the fate of the spirits is up in the air, there has been a lot of character development. Something foretold in an interview I conducted with School Spirits’ actors Miles Elliot (who plays Yuri) and Ci Hang Ma (who plays Quinn).Â
As we head into the last few episodes of the season, I think it’s important that I spotlight the words from both Ci Hang and Miles about their respective characters. It's the right point of the season to do do as some of the events referenced have already played out on-screen. Now that we’ve gotten here, it seems like a good time to let the performers talk about what they think of their character development in season 3 of School Spirits.
The first question I asked the pair was what they were looking forward to the audience seeing from their characters throughout the season. Ci Hang Ma spoke about the importance of Quinn's understanding that they are non-binary - something that we see on-screen in episode 4, "The Bereftest Club."
“Quinn comes into themselves a lot more. Last season, when Quinn joined this group of ghosts, they weren’t sure of themselves, and they just really wanted to belong and help. And this season, they’re standing their ground a bit more, and they’re becoming strong because they’re actually expressing themselves more with the help of the ghosts, but, in particular, Rhonda."
They also spoke about the developing relationship between Quinn and Rhonda and how it has helped both of them reach the stage that they are at in their respective character journeys.
"You see a lot more of Quinn and Rhonda developing their bond and getting to know each other even better. Affirming each other, and I think it’s a bond fans want to see."

Meanwhile, Miles Elliot discussed Yuri's character beyond his introduction in the second season, specifically regarding the development that he undergoes throughout season 3 - which allows the character to reach his full potential before the end of season 3.
"I think there were a lot of theories about Yuri post-season 2 because he doesn’t share a lot. And I’m really happy with who he really is. And this season, I really think we get to explore that. And, at the end of the season, you know who he is. He makes it clear, and he really comes out of his shell in a really brave way for him. It was really fun to do. So I’m excited for people to get to know him a bit more beyond the mysterious guy. He really becomes a person this season, which I think is awesome."
Miles' comments couldn’t be more perfect when it comes to summing up Yuri's journey this season. In this season of School Spirits, viewers learn what’s in Yuri’s scar, what he was terrified of, and a secret that nearly caused him and Charley to break up. It’s no wonder Miles was excited for people learn more about the character.
As we near the season 3 finale of School Spirits, it’s important to pay attention to the way characters begin to act. Yes, Quinn and Rhonda finally kissed (all of us were waiting on it), and Charley and Yuri seem to be growing as a couple, but that could change in an instant. One of them could move on, or a damaging secret could cause more conflict in any relationship. And seeing as how this show always ends with a cliffhanger, who knows where the rest of it could take them.
