Superman and Lois Lane are the most iconic relationships in comic books. It’s more than their longevity (which is impressive in itself). The two have been through ups and downs and find ways to get through without being toxic to each other. I’m sure that have been moments where they were and this writer doesn’t know about them. But, for the most part, they’ve been the pinnacle of relationship goals.
Over the last decade-plus, comic book love lives have been shattered. Colossus and Kitty Pryde officially ended their relationship in X-Men Gold No. 30. Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson have been on and off again for decades, but Zeb Wells’ Amazing Spider-Man broke them up for good. On one of Bam Smack Pow’s Instagram posts highlighting Lois and Clark, some of the commenters said it’s time to break up Superman and Lois. This writer is here to say, absolutely not.
Let me start by saying I’m not a comic book fan against change with characters I love. Deadpool and Wolverine are two of my favorites and they’d only be good if they constantly evolved. Deadpool being pansexual and Wolverine continuing to have a caring side made them more likable and relatable. If Superman and Lois were becoming stagnant, it would be time to switch things up. Thankfully, they haven’t.
Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s relationship has constantly evolved. For example, writers have shown that the couple has a healthy sex life. During Action Comics No. 1051, Jon Kent makes the mistake of looking in one of his parents’ closets and finds Superman’s Warworld cape complete with chains and a leather collar. The combination of Lois running to the door and Jon's embarrassment explains it all. Either Lois likes her husband to wear it when they get it on or Clark does. Either way, they seem to enjoy it.
Speaking of War World, it’s not as if Lois and Clark are attached at the hip. Yes, they work together and Lois is currently Superwoman, but, during Warworld Saga, the two spent months apart. When they reconnected, it was a beautiful sight. As soon as he got to Earth, he grabbed Lois and flew her into the air. The issue ends with them kissing like it was their first time.
There have been missions where Superman is gone for an extended period or times when Lois Lane is reporting from another part of the world. Sure, Clark could be with her in the blink of an eye, but he knows that every couple needs their space. He trusts his wife to call if he’s needed but believes she’s tough enough to venture into a dangerous situation on her own.
To hit the point home and not make it look like they have the perfect relationship, let’s look at Rainbow Rowell’s first DC Comics story “Lois & Clark: In Love at Work” in Action Comics No. 1067.
While Lois was adjusting to being the Daily Planet’s editor-in-chief (Perry White is the mayor of Metropolis), she decided to keep Clark off Superman stories. Clark was saddened because he felt like Lois didn’t trust him. The real reason is Supes is too close to the story and she felt he'd do better reporting on other stories. This leads to them being distant for a spell. Thankfully, this wasn’t their first disagreement. The two eventually spoke and understood each other’s points. It was a beautiful moment.
A debate could be made that some time apart could make them better, but it’s doubtful it would be received well in the long run. People have said hurtful things to and about Zeb Wells for breaking up MJ and Peter Parker (this writer got them too for saying that he liked the story). Imagine the backlash if Lois and Supes broke up.
Changing classic things may not be worth it in the long run even if the story is good. Especially when it comes to the most recognized fictional couple of all time. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to see if something happens to Superman and Lois in DC Comics.
