Six new, must-read comic books to pick up this week

If you're going to grab new comic books this week, make sure one of these six on this list is on your list. Stories like Amazing Spider-Man No. 60 are crucial to the Marvel Comics universe while Wolverine: Revenge is just a good story to read.

It’s the final week of the month meaning that there aren’t a lot of new releases. Does that mean there aren’t any good comic books to pick up? Of course not! Marvel Comics and BOOM! Studios have you covered.

As always, let’s start with the pick of the week.

Amazing Spider-Man No. 60 (pick of the week)

  • Writers: Zeb Wells and Joe Kelly
  • Artists: Ed McGuinness, Mark Buckingham, Paolo Rivera, Patrick Gleason, Todd Nauck, and Alessandro Cappuccio

This is the final issue of Zeb Wells’ run. Love it or hate it (and I loved it), but it was consistently purchased and talked about every month. But everything must come to an end. In this finale, the story will lead into the next Spidey tale, The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man.

This is an oversized Amazing Spider-Man that will likely have conclusions to most of Zeb Wells’ storylines. Will Mary Jane and Paul stay together? What's next for Tombstone? Is Norman Osborn cured of his Green Goblin persona? You’ll have to read the comic to find out.

Something is Killing the Children Vol. 8

  • Writer: James Tynion IV
  • Artist: Werther Dell'edera

I don’t normally put trades in these articles, but this one is too good to leave out. Even if you’ve never read an issue of Something is Killing the Children, you can still enjoy these stories. They’re all tales of Erica Slaughter before the main story began. It’s a brilliant way to lead into her next arc and learn more about what made Erica who she is.

Batman The Long Halloween: The Last Halloween No. 2

  • Writer: Jeph Loeb
  • Artist: Klaus Janson

The last page of Batman The Long Halloween: The Last Halloween No. 1 shows Harvey Dent bleeding from a gunshot wound caused by criminals in clown masks. What's more baffling is the shooter knows that Harvey Dent’s wife Gilda is the real Holiday Killer. Not even Batman knows this.

With Harvey incapacitated, she won’t have a choice but to agree to their terms. One of them says they only want to talk, but it has to be more than that. Also, are these Joker's henchmen? Calendar Man is after Harvey and Gilda in the prelude. Does this mean he's back for more but hiding under a different gimmick?

Namor No. 4

  • Writer: Jason Aaron
  • Artists: Alex Lins and Paul Davidson

Jason Aaron has continued to keep Namor as the narcissist he’s known for, but showing the regret the former King of Atlantis has for his past mistakes. The best part about that is Jason Aaron showing readers how we get the Namor we know.

Namor was raised and groomed to be a killer. That's why he’s made so many mistakes. Some of it is anger and resentment. Some of it is habit and voices he was probably programmed to hear. But it can all be connected to childhood trauma.

With everything else going on, Namor is confronted by a woman from his past named Kailani. She was more than just the first woman he loved. Kailani helped Namor understand that there was more to the seven seas than his kingdom allowed him to see. Now they’re grown and on the middle of a war of the seas and the cusp of a fight with the surface world.

Wolverine: Revenge No. 3

  • Writer:  Jonathan Hickman
  • Artist: Greg Capullo

Wolverine: Revenge taking place in an alternate reality means anything can happen. For example, at the end of issue No. 2, Logan takes Sabretooth’s healing factor away and plans on killing him. And the cover of issue 3 shows Wolverine fighting his former friend Colossus. This will likely lead to Piotr's death.

Logan may have killed Sabretooth in Marvel continuity (Wolverine: Sabretooth War), but not one of his closest friends. With Hickman writing this, you can bet something crazy will happen in issue 3 and beyond.

NYX No. 4

  • Writers: Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing
  • Artist: Enid Balám

Each issue of NYX has focused on a different character. This one will be about David Alleyne (Prodigy) looking to see what mutant culture means. If the cover of this issue is any indication of what’s going to happen, David will learn that there’s a new Quiet Council and one of their members is Hellion. Will David also learn that Sophie is secretly working with Hellion? Will Prodigy join them? Is Sophie working as a double agent? Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out.
