The Christmas season is now fully upon us, and the official Star Wars Kids YouTube channel celebrated by uploading a hilarious new video called Blowing Up the Gingerbread Death Star, which recreates the iconic Death Star trench run scene, from Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, out of gingerbread.
That’s right, everything from Luke Skywalker and his X-Wing and the Death Star itself - and even the proton torpedoes which Luke fires into the main reactor - are made from gingerbread in the delightful video, which runs for 1 minute and 52 seconds in length. Aside from the fact that everything is made from gingerbread, the video actually is completely accurate to the original scene from A New Hope, with the original audio from the film being used and the shots being practically identical.
So, if you ever watched A New Hope and thought that it would be better if Darth Vader was made of gingerbread (we know you’re out there!), your wish has finally been answered.
Needless to say, the video is the most hilarious thing you’ll see all day, and you might just feel hungry for a gingerbread snack after watching it! The Death Star might be the ultimate weapon in the universe, but it has certainly never looked so tasty. And the sight of the sinister Death Star exploding into chunks of delicious-looking pieces of sugary, baked debris will no doubt leave you rubbing your stomach and craving a tasty, sweetened snack.
Despite its comedic premise, Blowing Up the Gingerbread Death Star was certainly a painstaking technical feat featuring highly advanced visual effects.. The official Star Wars website published an article stating that the video was created by Industrial Light & Magic, with Unreal Engine technology also being used in its creation. ILM staffer Landis Fields was one of the key creatives behind the video, and he offered some fascinating quotes about the process of developing the short, including the initial rationale behind the creation of the video in the first place. He was quoted as saying the following about how Blowing Up the Gingerbread Death Star came to be, and why he thinks it will entertain Star Wars fans:
“The goal is for people to see the magic of these stories, but also to want to make a cool costume or to draw something or to do whatever it is that makes them happy… I just want people, especially children, to see that and have that fire and that excitement.”
In all seriousness, it’s great to see the Star Wars Kids YouTube channel celebrating the festive season in such a fun and creative way, and fans will no doubt be delighted by Blowing Up the Gingerbread Death Star. The wonderfully hilarious video will certainly help viewers to get into the festive spirit, and everyone at Bam Smack Pow would also like to wish all our readers a cheerful holiday season and a very happy 2026.
