We've got some sad news about Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord season 2

The next episode of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord won't be coming anytime soon. The good news is that season 2 is still on its way.

It's safe to say that Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord has been a resounding success story. The animated series brought one of Star Wars' most underrated villains back to our screens and placed him front and center for the first time ever, allowing us all to bask in his intimidating glory. Throw in Sam Witwer's exhilarating voice performance and place it directly between fellow animated triumphs The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels and you have a winner in just about every single way.

The Disney Plus series released two new episodes each Monday across a five week period, appropriately completing its first season on May 4 - Star Wars Day. It was renewed for a second season ahead of its own series premiere, so we know it will be back for another run. Unfortunately, it might be some time before that happens because, despite the optimism from those involved about its progress, it isn't expected to return this year.

Maul: Shadow Lord isn't expected to return until 2027 at the earliest

If you're hoping to tune into Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord season 2 (or episodes 11 and 12) in the not-too-distant future, you're probably going to be disappointed. Although production is underway on the heavily-anticipated second season, there is no definitive release date or even release window simply due to the fact that it's too far out to announce anything - and, well, animation takes time.

Star Sam Witwer recently spoke to The Direct about the show's second season, confirming that they have been working on it "for a while". He did tease that the "audiences won't have to wait too, too long" but he did enforce that it would be "the usual development cycle", which likely rules out a 2026 comeback.

"It's the usual development cycle... I know when it's coming out, but it's not a situation where the audiences will have to wait too, too long. But I think I am forbidden from saying what I know, but we are working on it. We've been working on it for a while, and it's interesting."

That "usual development cycle" is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it means that the show will likely sidestep the multi-year gaps that has befallen a lot of these big-budget streaming shows over the past few years, as Disney Plus' animated fare do successfully have annual seasons. And, unfortunately for the fans hoping that the show might have returned at some point this year due to its early renewal, that comment also likely rules out a 2026 return.

You might think a potential 2026 return is outlandish and, for this show, you're probably right! However, we are seeing a growing trend of animated shows successfully completing their next seasons before the end of the same year that its previous season aired in - which creates the potential for a two-season release in the same calendar year. Netflix pulled this off with Stranger Things: Tales From '85, announcing that the animated spinoff would return for another outing in the fall just days after its first season premiered. Meanwhile, Prime Video have prepared Invincible season 5 for release even though the streamer doesn't plan on actually releasing it until next year. So everybody's formats are different.

The good news is that Maul - Shadow Lord will return for a second season. It might not be tomorrow, next week, or even this year, but the entity known as Darth Maul has many more adventures ahead of him and we can't wait to see where they take him - as well as the residents of the planet Janix that he crossed paths with throughout the first season.

The season 1 finale proved to be one of the most epic episodes in Star Wars history as it finally saw Darth Maul and Darth Vader battle each other in a lightsaber duel for the ages. We never thought we would see a moment like that come to life in the franchise, so that just highlights what Maul is truly capable of. We can't wait to see what other dreams it brings to life... even if we have to wait until next year to see them come to life!
