Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow will feature a previously unannounced DC hero

It's a Bird... It's a Plane... Is it not Superman? Man of Tomorrow will feature the appearance of another iconic DC hero aside from Clark Kent.

Not too long ago, DC found itself in a very interesting position. The superhero giant had to find a way to seamlessly transition from its previous cinematic universe, dubbed the DC Extended Universe (or DCEU for short), to a new interconnected franchise of projects, simply named the DC Universe. Unfortunately, this change wasn't as smooth as fans originally expected.

While characters like Superman were recast, others like Peacemaker are currently being played by the same DCEU actors. Furthermore, some events from the previous cinematic universe are canon, but others were completely disregarded. A few sequences were retconned, and fans don't quite know where one universe ends and the other begins.

The upside of all this chaos is that the studio now has the freedom to determine which characters of the DCEU to bring into its new DCU. Better yet, Xolo MaridueƱa's Blue Beetle is among them, and he's bound to make his long-awaited comeback very soon.

Xolo MaridueƱa will return as Blue Beetle in the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow

Blue Beetle was originally envisioned as part of the now-defunct DCEU. However, after assuming the role of co-CEO and co-chairman of DC Studios, James Gunn announced that the iconic hero would carry over into the new and ongoing DCU. While there were no details as to when or where he would appear next, the cat is now out of the bag.

As revealed by Deadline, Xolo MaridueƱa will reprise his role as Blue Beetle in Man of Tomorrow. The sequel to 2025's Superman is already shaping up to become the biggest and most ambitious DCU movie to date. After all, it is set to feature the return of Supergirl, Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, John Stewart, and Lex Luthor (who will now get to wear his iconic Warsuit).

As if that wasn't enough, the Man of Steel's upcoming adventure will also mark the live-action debut of one of the most terrifying DC villains ever created, Brainiac, who will be portrayed by Lars Eidinger. Now, Jaime Reyes will also get to join the big leagues.

Blue Beetle told an origin story that remained largely isolated from the wider DCEU. This now plays in the hero's favor, as no retcons are needed for his character to join David Corenswet's Superman on the big screen. Blue Beetle didn't feature any major cameos from the likes of Ben Affleck's Batman or Henry Cavill's Clark Kent, nor did it mention those specific portrayals directly. Granted, the film featured a few references to other DC characters here and there, but nothing that could have major story implications.

Back in 2024, it was announced that Blue Beetle would have his own animated series set in the DCU, but no development updates have been revealed since then. As such, it seems DC changed its original strategy and will now continue the hero's story on the big screen. Perhaps the events of Man of Tomorrow could indirectly set up a potential Blue Beetle 2, provided that fan reception to the character is positive. After all, this would mirror what happened with fan favorite Mister Terrific.

When James Gunn announced one half of the projects slated to be part of the first chapter in the DCU, a Mister Terrific TV series wasn't in the cards. However, the iconic hero is set to now star in his own standalone show, likely due to the overwhelmingly positive response to his character (and, quite frankly, his fight sequence) in Superman. So, if audiences welcome Blue Beetle with open arms once again, then we could see a follow-up to his 2023 movie.

In the meantime, it's nice to learn that Blue Beetle will be back in action, and we can't wait to see how he will be incorporated into the new DCU.

Man of Tomorrow will be released on Jul. 9, 2027.
