After the events of Absolute Power, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman met with Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) to discuss what had just happened. Oliver says that the Justice League's disbanding at the end of Dark Crisis is why Amanda Waller took over so easily. DC Comics’ Trinity agreed. They were also one step ahead of Green Arrow because they started to put plans in motion for the biggest Justice League ever.
During the DC Comics’ All in Special, a plethora of heroes were invited to be members of the Justice League. It seemed like the right idea to have so many heroes working together. This way, everyone could pool their resources and intelligence together for a common cause. In issue No. 9 of Justice League Unlimited, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman meet in secret to say that they made a mistake.
The events of Gorilla Grodd almost taking over the world and messing with the multiverse left the Justice League’s Trinity feeling uneasy (read the crossover We Are Yesterday for that story). Batman said that in their rush to assemble the team, they made a mistake. What that is remains to be seen. However, we can guess that they're referring to offering memberships to too many people. And, honestly, no one should be shocked. The idea of having this many heroes in one place was smart in theory. Everyone had a chance to learn from each other. With that comes three problems.
First, they were too trusting. They gave an unproven superhero, Airwave (who's a younger version of Harold Jordan), access to the Watchtower. If they had, it’s likely that they would have known something was off and learned that Grodd had gotten hold of him.
Second, there were too many cooks in the kitchen. On more than a few occasions, readers saw the heroes butt heads over differences of opinion. One particular example came in John Layman’s Titans when they were determining what to do with former Amanda Waller villain, Vanadia.
Lastly, having all those heroes in one place made them an easy target. The villains didn’t have to get them to assemble. They already were. That left no one to call once things got bad, and boy, did they.
Now, there’s no guarantee that the Justice League will be downsizing, but it’s an easy guess. But it could be something else. The decision being made could be about the new black ops team, Justice League Red, written by Saladin Ahmed (Daredevil and Wolverine) with art by Clayton Henry (Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent and Action Comics). And, according to the image above, the team is Red Tornado (leading the team), Deadman, Power Girl, Simon Baz, Cyborg, and Red Arrow (Emiko Queen).
The idea of a covert Justice League team will be incredible, especially with the creative team in charge. The only question now is how the team was brought together. Was it the idea of Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman? Did events take place to bring them together? Or did Red Tornado see that things needed changing and create this team himself?
