Superman gains a brand new superpower (and a new super-weakness)

In the first issue of Dan Slott’s Superman: Unlimited, the Man of Steel’s resolve and strength were tested. An asteroid made of Green Kryptonite was headed to Earth, and Supes was the only Justice League member around to stop it. It took all of his power to slow it down and even more to prevent the crash from killing people. Thankfully, he survived with the help of a new ability.

While Clark was in a coma, the scientists on the Justice League Watchtower learned that Superman had developed a way to stop his body from being weakened by Kryptonite. His body would glow as bright as the sun and protect him from the Green-K’s radiation. The reasoning is explained in Superman: Unlimited No. 2. However, before Clark heads back to Earth, Batman explains what they know, and it isn’t all good news.

  • Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo

First, the golden glow comes from the yellow sun energy stored in his cells. Whenever Clark takes too much Kryptonite damage, his body glows yellow and becomes immune to Green-K for 200 seconds. However, the reason the other Kryptonians may not have gotten this ability is that Clark has been on Earth longer and has had more exposure to the yellow Sun. Lastly, after the solar energy in his body is spent, he no longer has superpowers, but is still vulnerable to Kryptonite.

When it comes to Superman, one of the things that comic book fans complain about is that he’s too powerful. Even Superboy made a joke issue No. 2 about Supes getting a new power,  saying, “Like he didn’t have enough already.” The good news is that Dan Slott is a brilliant writer. He knows that with great power must also come great responsibility, and writing the world’s greatest hero is a major responsibility.

The point of this new Green Kryptonite world is to give the Man of Steel a tougher go at saving the world. Leaving him invulnerable would be great for him, but not for the other Kryptonians. It also would have left fans annoyed. Now, thanks to something that's supposed to shield him, things may have gotten worse.

Thanks to the Creeper being, well, himself, the world has noticed that Superman can be hurt. It’s only a matter of time before every villain starts taking their shot to be the one who kills Superman. And, the first up to bat is one of Supes’ oldest villains, Toyman. Stay tuned to Bam Smack Pow to find out how that ends.
