The Batman: Part II set pictures reference a major villain

Ever since a sequel to Matt Reeves' The Batman was announced, superhero fans have been eager to uncover who Bruce Wayne will face next. The Caped Crusader has one of the biggest and most iconic rogues' galleries in the comic book world, meaning almost any antagonist has the potential to captivate audiences.

Unfortunately, after a couple of delays, casting announcements, and weeks of filming, we were still no closer to learning who the main villain of The Batman: Part II is. But although an official confirmation still eludes us, a new set picture may finally point us in the right direction.

The Batman: Part II is currently filming in London, and fans have gotten small glimpses of the superhero production. Bruce seems to be wearing a slightly upgraded version of his Batsuit, although it features no major changes. Additionally, we've seen behind-the-scenes footage of action sequences involving the Batmobile, the Batcycle, and many GCPD vehicles. However, our most interesting look at the upcoming film came thanks to a protester sequence being shot in St. Paul's Cathedral, where multiple signs hint that an iconic criminal organization will make its big-screen debut.

We all know Batman's modus operandi: he watches the city from the shadows, uncovering information along the way and pulling a few strings to steer Gotham in the right direction. Unfortunately for him, a major criminal organization does the same but with the sole purpose of leading the city into ruins to benefit from other people's mysery, and it's the Court of Owls.

Matt Reeves stated that The Batman: Part II will dive into a deeper story of corruption, which led fans to believe that the Court would finally appear in a movie. Now, new set pictures suggest the iconic organization does have a role to play in the upcoming DC Elseworlds production.

Perhaps the most direct reference to the villain is the sign that reads "Court of Fowls." That being said, most of these signs seem to reference everything the Court stands for: corruption and gathering riches at the expense of others. Interestingly, a different video depicts Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne walking in the middle of the crowd as angry rioters violently yell at him.

The Batman (2022) already revealed the Wayne family had a dark past. As such, the sequel could explore this concept even further by unveiling that Thomas was a member of the Court of Owls. On the other hand, citizens of Gotham could simply believe that Bruce is a member of the Court due to his social status, which would explain why the masses are angry at him.

Either way, there's a chance that the Court will be integral to Bruce's arc in the sequel. Tying the two together would be a nice way to raise the stakes even further, and we all know that comic book villains always have a bit more depth when the hero has a personal connection to them.

Interestingly, a casting announcement for The Batman: Part II also supports the idea that the Court of Owls will appear in the film. Actor David Twinberrow will portray the "elite patron of a club" in Matt Reeves' upcoming film, which would perfectly fit the description of a member of the Court. Similarly, plot rumors indicate that Scarlett Johansson's character will hunt the elite members of Gotham, adding even more credibility to the theory that the Court is slowly driving the city into ruins.

At this point, there's enough evidence to suggest that the Court will be in The Batman: Part II. Of course, there's also a chance that the signs used in the set video are nothing more than Easter Eggs, and citizens of Gotham are rioting against someone else. But with a bit of luck, it won't be long before Matt Reeves finally pulls back the curtain on this highly anticipated project and reveals who the Caped Crusader will fight next.

The Batman: Part II will be released on Feb. 18, 2028.
