It's been a big week for The Punisher. Jon Bernthal's world-renowned anti-hero is set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe movie debut as Frank Castle will appear in this summer's Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The first trailer was released on March 18 and it confirmed as much, showcasing the first look at the character crossing paths with Spidey. Needless to say, he had some choice words for the webslinger.
However, Bernthal will be making another Marvel appearance in the franchise in the not-too-distant future, as he is set to star in his own standalone Special Presentation focused on The Punisher. And, after much anticipation, a new exciting update suggests that it may not be too far away.
The Punisher Special Presentation has a surprising runtime
The Punisher Special Presentation has a runtime of 60 minutes. This new revelation comes directly from a listing on the Writers Guild of America website, which also lists Jon Bernthal himself as a co-writer (alongside Reinaldo Marcus Green). And that is pretty darn exciting, as this unexpectedly longer runtime differentiates it from previous Marvel Studios Special Presentations.
Werewolf by Night, the 2022 Halloween Special from the MCU, had a runtime of 52 minutes, while The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special had a much shorter runtime of 42 minutes. If The Punisher's listed length turns out to be accurate, that would make it the longest of the Disney Plus Special Presentations - which is a victory in and of itself.

What's interesting about the Frank Castle adventure, which currently has a rumored title of Punisher: One Shot Special, is that it is expected to be somewhat more "canon" to the MCU's primary storylines than its predecessors. While both of the previous specials are technically canon to the shared universe's overarching storylines, they are also pretty standalone. Werewolf by Night introduced new, supernatural characters to begin building the separate, supernatural realm of the MCU, while The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is pretty self-contained, with only one real moment having a long-term impact on the characters' journeys.
Punisher, however, takes an already-established character within the MCU franchise and further develops his story. This, and the 60-minute runtime, essentially allow it to act as a mini movie starring the Punisher character. And, you know what? We're so here for that!
Frank Castle is one of the MCU's most deeply-flawed, struggling characters. He's unapologetic in his quest for vengeance, knowing full well that he crosses lines that nobody else will. This has led to a number of clashes with Daredevil over the years (both in the original Netflix series and its Disney Plus revival series) and it looks like it will do the same for his potential relationship with Spider-Man in the pair's upcoming Brand New Day crossover. It goes without saying that it will be fascinating to see him deal with his own issues in the upcoming special, especially as he is often dragged into other heroes' battles. We haven't seen a solo adventure from Frank since 2019. What would that look like in 2026? And, perhaps most importantly, what would it look like in the official MCU?

Bernthal has been portraying The Punisher since the character's introduction in season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil. It was unclear whether the dark, gritty Netflix shows were canon to the MCU at the time because of how different they were in tone and style to the light-hearted superhero movies. The Punisher was one of the most gritty characters of all, with Bernthal's performance receiving continued acclaim throughout the weeks and months after season 2's release. He then went on to headline his own spinoff series, aptly titled The Punisher - which ran for two seasons between 2016 and 2019.
Although he was offered the chance to return for Marvel Studios' revival series Daredevil: Born Again, Bernthal famously declined due to the new approach to Daredevil's story as well as the decision to differentiate the characters from their Netflix counterparts. When that wrong was righted and Marvel officially rebooted the revival as a direct sequel to the Netflix shows, he agreed to return as his original version of Frank Castle - eventually appearing in two episodes Born Again's first season. That opportunity has led to his own spinoff Special Presentation and a major role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
It's been a long time since Marvel Studios has produced a Special Presentation. It goes without saying that The Punisher is a perfect character to bring the concept back for. And we can't wait for Frank Castle's mini MCU movie to arrive on Disney Plus. As it currently stands, it's set for a summer release. The only question will be whether it will come before or after Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Either way, we're seated!
