If someone had asked you in 2010 whether the world of The Walking Dead would still be continuing in 2025, you probably would have said no. And it would be understandable, for no matter how successful any project becomes, to endure for that long - while the characters are still on your screens - is damn-near impossible. But the TWD Universe has found a way to do it.
The original TV series came to an end in 2022, but between spinoffs that were already on the air and a batch of new ones headlined by TWD legends, the saga has continued beyond that. Now, here we are in 2025, with new seasons of two of the spinoffs to look forward to in the near-future.
However, there is one Walking Dead show that we shouldn't expect to see new seasons - or even new episodes - of anytime soon, as new comments from the mastermind of the TWD Universe have fans convinced the show has been quietly cancelled.
There are no plans for another season of Tales of the Walking Dead right now
The tales of the Walking Dead universe may be continuing on a yearly basis but the same can't be said for the spinoff of the same name. Tales of the Walking Dead was actually one of the two first new spinoffs announced upon the revelation that the original show would end and it thrilled fans for six wonderfully unnerving episodes. Unfortunately, it sounds like there aren't any plans to bring the show back... at least for now.
In a new interview with The Direct, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe Scott Gimple was asked about the future of the show. In spite of his enthusiasm to produce more episodes of the spinoff, he revealed that there no "imminent plans" to do so, explaining that it's a more challenging show to make given the standalone nature of each episode.
"I'm desperate to do more of those. We don't have imminent plans to do it, but I'm constantly, constantly, constantly bringing it up. It's a more challenging show because of the variety, because you're starting at zero every episode. So that's one thing that's sort of slowing it down a little bit. But I always keep it in the mix as a possibility."
This is definitely something of a bittersweet statement from Gimple. The fact that he's keeping it in the mix as a possibility means that there is hope to revisit it in the future, but it sounds like it has been ruled out as a regular ongoing part of the TWD Universe.
Tales of the Walking Dead was first announced alongside the TWD sequel series starring Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier (with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride reprising their respective roles). The latter eventually became The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which earned critical acclaim in its first season as Daryl traversed France on a new mission (McBride's Carol would join him in season 2 after the star requested a break in the first season). Those weren't the only TWD spinoffs either, as The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live were announced shortly afterwards.
While the latter was confirmed to be a miniseries after its run, both Daryl Dixon and Dead City were renewed for second seasons (and in the former's case: A third). There hasn't been any kind of announcement, however, about the future of Tales of the Walking Dead. And that has left fans constantly wondering if the original point of the series was to simply serve as a miniseries.
Gimple's confirmation that there aren't any plans for new episodes right now has led to fans believing that the show is officially cancelled. Even if the door has been left open, the fact that the franchise is continuing to produce two ongoing shows, with the potential for more in the near-future, and perhaps the return of Rick Grimes and Michonne in another project now that The Ones Who Live has completed its run, all does seem like the franchise has no plans of revisiting Tales.
Hopefully we're wrong, because considering this new era of the TWD Universe started with the announcement of Tales of the Walking Dead, it just doesn't feel right that it isn't currently a part of it.
