Tom Holland says the Spider-Man 4 script "needs work"
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing up for the second half of its Multiverse Saga. The saga opened with 18 titles in its fourth phase, so it's probably over halfway through from that standpoint, but Marvel Studios has since dialled back on its output as it pushes towards the two Avengers movies that will close out this particular chapter of the franchise.
Those are the two biggest titles on the horizon, but one that is arguably equally as big is Spider-Man 4. It's not yet clear when exactly the movie will arrive in theaters (though there are some theories) but things are coming together, as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton has been confirmed as the film's director.
That's not the only aspect coming together, as Tom Holland has confirmed that there is a script in development.
Tom Holland admits Spider-Man 4 script needs work, but he's very excited about it
Tom Holland has opened up about the Spider-Man 4 script, confirming that a draft of it exists. The MCU star appeared on the Rich Roll podcast recently and spoke about the development of it, revealing that he actually read it three weeks ago and that "it really lit a fire" in him.
"We have a creative and a pitch and a draft, which is excellent. It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job... I read it three weeks ago, and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together, and we at times were bouncing around the living room, like this is a real movie worthy of fans’ respect."
It's not surprising that the script isn't quite ready yet as it's still in early development, but the fact that Holland and Zendaya are so excited about Spider-Man 4 certainly bodes well for the movie. After all, both have been a part of all three films in the Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy - all of which were extremely well-received by fans and critics - so it goes without saying that they would have an idea of what the fans would respond well to.
The movie has been at the forefront of most MCU discussions among fans simply because of how game-changing its predecessor, 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, was. That movie brought Tom Holland's wall-crawler face-to-face with both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men, which made for one of the great cinematic moments of the 21st century. It also closed out Jon Watts' trilogy on a definitive note while also leaving the door open for a continuation.
Sony then confirmed that there were plans for a new Spider-Man trilogy that would take the character into new territory. There has been a lot of hope that this new territory will allow Peter Parker to set himself apart in a more Spider-Man-like production that isn't as closely tied to the MCU, but the hopes of a grounded adventure have since been dashed due to a multitude of recent rumors suggesting that the film will instead be another multiversal movie.
Irrespective of whether Sony and Marvel opt for a multiversal or grounded approach for the storyline, excitement for Spider-Man 4 continues to increase. It's easily one of the most anticipated movies on the horizon, and that likely won't be changing any time soon.
Holland made his debut as the webslinger in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. He then went on to headline solo movies Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home while also reprising the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Needless to say, fans are counting down the days until they see the MCU's Peter Parker again.
