Tony Stark said it best: "Part of the journey is the end," and whether we like it or not, Tom Holland's Spider-Man will eventually have to hang up the red-and-blue suit. This iteration of the wall-crawler has lived through a lot of memorable adventures, appearing in two Avengers movies, a Civil War crossover, and four standalone films, the latest of which has been met with overwhelming critical and commercial success. No live-action version of the character has accomplished this much, but Peter Parker's story will eventually come to an end.
Reports indicate that this new, ongoing Spider-Man trilogy—which began with No Way Home—could be Peter's very last. Granted, in the midst of that, there are bound to be Avengers films like Secret Wars in which the character is likely to appear, and perhaps even street-level crossovers with characters like Daredevil if rumors are to be believed.
But after everything is said and done, will Spidey get to pass the baton to someone else? And if so, how will that moment play out? Well, Tom Holland has revealed that there's already a plan set in stone for his character's farewell.
Tom Holland talks about Spider-Man's farewell and a possible Miles Morales introduction
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Tom Holland was asked whether he knows when it will be time to pass the baton to someone like Miles Morales or how he wants that moment to play out, to which the actor replied:
"There's a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home. It's laid out. It's going to change, for sure. But I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it's really exciting. I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure."
For starters, it is worth pointing out that these plans could take years, if not decades, to materialize. Case in point: Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently revealed that there are MCU projects currently planned out all the way through 2042. Furthermore, just because it is currently being reported that this ongoing Spider-Man trilogy will be the character's last doesn't mean that will end up being the case. However, it is clear that Peter will retire at some point, and it seems Miles Morales will be the one to carry his legacy, just as happened in the comic book world.
During an interview on Radio 1 Live, Tom Holland revealed that he already knows "when" we'll get to see Miles Morales (as opposed to whether we ever will), signaling that the iconic Marvel character is bound to appear on the big screen. Spider-Man: Homecoming included a cameo appearance by Miles' uncle Aaron Davis, who just so happens to be the supervillain called the Prowler. This means Miles already lives in the MCU, but of course there's always the chance that Marvel decides to pivot from these original plans.
With Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, it will be the perfect opportunity to introduce new heroes that weren't part of the MCU before. It has been heavily rumored that a whole new generation of mutants and X-Men will make their debut during the crossover film and then join the mainline MCU afterward, so what's stopping Miles from doing the same? After all, Miles joined the mainline Earth-616 in the comics after the events of the Secret Wars comic-book storyline.
If this turns out to be true, there's a chance Spider-Man 5 could feature both Peter Parker and Miles Morales concurrently swinging across New York and webbing up bad guys. The two could join forces on a few projects before Peter eventually decides to fully pass the baton to Miles... or before he bites the dust. Whatever the case, it seems Miles' introduction is all but a given, and we can't wait to see how it plays out (even if we'll never be ready to bid farewell to Tom Holland's Spider-Man).
