Star Wars fans are still waiting for the much-awaited Rey (Daisy Ridley) film, which was announced back in 2023. However, in the mean time, fans can look forward to a new Rey story; there’s one catch though, it’s not on screen.
Announced during the Lucasfilm Publishing panel at New York Comic Con, a new Star Wars novel titled Star Wars: Legacy will be released in the summer of 2026, featuring Rey and her Jedi master, Leia Organa.
The book is written by bestselling genre writer Madeleine Roux, who contributed a story to Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View, the 40th anniversary celebration anthology of Star Wars: A New Hope. She also recently wrote 2024’s What If… Loki Was Worthy? This is Roux’s debut Star Wars novel.
Star Wars: Legacy offers up a new chapter in a beloved story
Star Wars: Legacy uncovers a new chapter in the story of Rey and Leia. It’s set between the events of the second sequel film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The Resistance are in tatters after battling the First Order on Crait. With minimal troops left, the remaining freedom fighters pin their hopes on the last Jedi—Rey. Unfortunately, Rey is just as lost. She’d only just begun her Jedi training in the second film, when Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) died. She needs guidance, especially to fix her broken lightsaber, but the only person who can help is an equally unsure General Leia.
But then the sacred Jedi texts offer the pair a gateway to fix the saber. They must travel to a Jedi temple on Tython to gain this knowledge. But the First Order are still on their heels. And the temple itself offers as many hurdles as it does answers.
Will this uneasy duo of master and apprentice find a way to work with each other and secure the future of the Resistance?
Star Wars: Legacy fills in some gaps
Star Wars audiences had longed to see Rey and General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) form a formidable partnership as master and apprentice. But unfortunately, Fisher passed away suddenly before filming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was complete. Director J.J. Abrams and his team were able to cobble together some footage to give Fisher, and her fans, an emotional send-off.
The creative team also filled in some backstory—Leia trained with Luke to start learning the ways of the Force. Star Wars: Legacy offers fans the chance to read more about Leia’s Jedi powers, as well as see a female pair leading the story.
The book also connects to other Star Wars properties. Tython is a planet that’s been featured across Star Wars books, like Doctor Aphra and Darth Vader, but it’s also appeared on The Mandalorian, and the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Roux will be adding new characters to the story, while also expanding the backstory and role of Captain Wolstenholme, a First Order officer who has only appeared in the Age of Resistance - Rose Tico #1 comic book so far.
Star Wars: Legacy by Madeleine Roux will be on sale on July 28, 2026.
