A wonderful new animated Star Wars series called Droid Diaries has debuted for free on the official Star Wars Kids YouTube channel, and you can watch the first three episodes in the player below. Each episode runs for just under three minutes, so this series is ideal for being enjoyed in short bursts without taking too much time out of your day.
Droid Diaries focuses on a series of fun and lighthearted adventures featuring R2-D2 and BB-8, two of the most popular and iconic droids from the Star Wars franchise. Each episode showcases the two highly toyetic droids getting into all sorts of whimsical and comedic mischief before coming up with humorous solutions to the problems they find themselves in.
The first episode is titled "R2-D2 and BB-8's Messy Mission!", and it focuses on the droids attempting to tidy a very messy Resistance base. And the second episode, titled "R2-D2 and BB-8's Quest for a New Arm!”, sees R2-D2 and BB-8 falling down a trap door and finding their way out after R2-D2 tries to find a new internal grappling arm. And the third episode to have been released, which is called "R2-D2, BB-8 and Rey's Lightsaber on the Loose!" shows us a hilarious excursion involving the two droids, along with Rey and her lightsaber on a desert world which they are visiting.
And fans of old school animation will be thrilled with the retro animation style, with Droid Diaries looking more like a Saturday morning cartoon from yesteryear as opposed to an animated series released by Disney in 2025. Best of all, you can even see white gaps in the colored marking along the droids, which clearly makes them look as though they were colored in by hand instead of digitally, giving the animation a distinct, sketchbook quality. And the series also features no dialogue, which means that the stories in each episode are told entirely through movements and visuals, almost making Droid Diaries seem like a silent movie from the early days of cinema.
Droid Diaries takes place around the time of the Sequel Trilogy, and Wookieepedia lists the series as canon. However, nothing particularly significant happens in each episode, so you can watch Droid Diaries without thinking much about how each episode will affect the Star Wars timeline, as the episodes contain very little actual plot to begin with. Instead, this is a very cozy and relaxing series which does not require its viewers to think too hard or focus on minor details, instead offering a series of very amusing and pleasant adventures which can be enjoyed by viewers of all ages. This is one animated Star Wars series which will surely delight fans for years to come.
