It isn't a secret that Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be the biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to date. Heroes we thought were long gone are bound to make a comeback, such as the X-Men from the Fox era. Furthermore, the Fantastic Four will finally join a big crossover after being isolated throughout their entire cinematic history. As if that wasn't enough, we'll also get to see some of the new heroes that have been introduced on the big screen since Phase 4 began, such as Shang-Chi and Namor.

The official Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal confirmed that over 25 characters are set to make an appearance. However, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that there is still room for more. That's great, considering that popular heroes such as Hulk and Captain Marvel haven't been confirmed to be in the movie. So, that prompts the question: What other surprises await? Well, one of them might've made its way online sooner than expected.

Spider-Man will reportedly appear in Avengers: Doomsday; role details unveiled

According to reliable insider Alex Perez, via The Cosmic Circus, Spider-Man is one of the heroes set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Furthermore, his role in the story will be similar to the one he had in Avengers: Infinity War.

While the wall-crawler is among the ten heroes with the most screentime in Infinity War, there's no denying that he didn't necessarily have the biggest impact on the plot. Granted, he aided Tony Stark in rescuing Doctor Strange from the Children of Thanos, and he also helped land the alien ship he was in on Titan. But beyond that, Peter was mostly there to beat up some bad guys and to make audiences cry when he turned to dust near the end of the movie.

Spider-Man has been the protagonist of no shortage of magical stories (such as the Eight Deaths of Spider-Man comic book arc), and multiversal tales (including Spider-Man: No Way Home). However, he's more often than not considered a street-level hero, which would explain why he wouldn't really have the biggest impact in a story about the fallout of the multiverse and the creation of Battleworld. Sure, there could be a slight chance that Marvel takes this opportunity to have him bond with the symbiote, as it happened in the original Secret Wars comic book arc. However, it's all the more likely that such a scenario is left off for... well, Avengers: Secret Wars.

It may seem strange for one of the biggest faces of the MCU to have a potentially small role in Avengers: Doomsday. However, it makes sense when considering we're approaching the end of the Multiverse Saga, and we won't see multiple characters after that point.

This is the last chance audiences will ever have of watching the X-Men from the Fox era interact with Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Besides, rumor has it that fan-favorites such as Chris Evans' Steve Rogers will also be added to the mix. If that turns out to be the case, then chances are this is his last ride as well. That's why they are likely to get the spotlight over other characters.

Reports indicate that Marvel is planning a street-level crossover between Spidey and Daredevil. That means there will be chances for Peter Parker to be the star of a major team-up further down the line. With that in mind, it wouldn't be disappointing at all if his role in Avengers: Doomsday mostly comes down to him showing up and beating up bad guys. If anything, it will be exciting to see him interact with so many new characters and potentially befriend Johnny Storm (even if it is just through some humorous dialogue in the middle of an action sequence).

Characters who played leading roles in Avengers: Infinity War, such as Doctor Strange, were sidelined during Avengers: Endgame. On the contrary, heroes like Steve Rogers, who barely had a say during the first of those crossovers, completely stole the spotlight the second time around. Given that the Russo Brothers, the directors behind those films, will also helm Doomsday and Secret Wars, it isn't too far-fetched to assume they will pull off a similar strategy. That means that Spidey could have a bigger role in the last Multiversal adventure, and perhaps even reunite with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Peter Parkers.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
