All the pieces are ready for the most ambitious Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover to play out on the big screen. The Avengers will face their biggest challenge yet when Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom enters the picture and tries to reign supreme over the multiverse as a whole.
Fortunately, Earth's Mightiest Heroes won't be on their own, as they will join forces with the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts (now dubbed the New Avengers), Wakandans, and Talokans. The official Avengers: Doomsday casting announcement revealed that characters from all these factions will appear in the same film, and even then, there are more surprises in store.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that unannounced characters are waiting to shock audiences when Avengers: Doomsday finally hits theaters. Multiple rumors have since made their way online, claiming that legendary heroes such as Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine could also jump into action and take the spotlight. However, a new report reveals that an iconic intergalactic ensemble could also add a bit more chaos to the mix.
Avengers: Doomsday will reportedly feature an iconic group of heroes
Industry insider James Mack revealed that Avengers: Doomsday will feature a sequence where a ship unexpectedly lands on Earth, and the new Guardians of the Galaxy emerge from it. It's still unclear what role Rocket, Groot, Cosmo, and Adam Warlock will play in the upcoming crossover, or whether their appearance is just a quick cameo that sets up the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. That said, it isn't surprising to learn that these heroes won't simply watch from the sidelines as the multiverse collapses.
Perhaps the biggest question is: Why will the Guardians travel to Earth in Avengers: Doomsday? After all, the group is known for causing mayhem in space, and most of its members have rarely set foot on our planet, other than to fight Thanos at the end of the Infinity Saga. Well, it isn't far-fetched to assume it's all connected to Peter Quill.
The ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 saw Quill hang up his mask and opt to live a peaceful life on Earth with his grandfather. While it was a bittersweet moment, the film did end with a promise: "The Legendary Star-Lord will return." While it was unclear when or where that would happen, leaked Avengers: Doomsday concept art showed the intergalactic hero next to White Vision and the New Avengers / Champions.
Peter Quill is all but confirmed to jump back into action if he learns about the inevitable arrival of Doctor Doom and his plan to reign supreme over the Multiverse. However, the situation could get a little more dire than originally anticipated, forcing Quill to contact Rocket and get the whole band together on Earth.
Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released in 2023, the intergalactic heroes have been absent from the MCU, with little to no rumors suggesting where they could appear next. While the end of their latest film saw a new iteration of the Guardians form, the team still operates in space, which has left them oblivious to the countless multiversal dangers unfolding on Earth. However, it's important to remember that the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts* revealed there's an ongoing "space crisis," which could surely catch the attention of Rocket and his team.
Another possibility is that the Guardians find out about the multiversal rift created during the ending of The Marvels and track other similar activity back to Earth. Perhaps they will be the ones who bring Peter Quill out of retirement when the multiverse starts to collapse.
One of the biggest selling points of Avengers: Infinity War was watching Earth's Mightiest Heroes cross paths with the Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time in cinematic history. As such, it seems fitting that both teams will be present to welcome the likes of the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the bigger MCU. Granted, it's important to take rumors with a grain of salt, but hopefully the band will reunite just in time for the end of the Multiverse Saga.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released on Dec. 18, 2026.
