Unexpected DC Comics character wins the DC KO tournament (but it isn’t over yet)

Superman No. 19 by Joshua Williamson may have hinted at the ending of the comic book event, DC K.O., and, over a year later, we didn’t notice.

The DC Comics event DC K.O. started with the death of Batman and continued to surprise readers. Both heroes and villains were overcoming odds, while others dominated as many expected. This leads to many people wondering who would win and become King Omega.

Last month, I wrote an article on which of the remaining five had the best odds of winning. Would it be Joker (0/10 chance of winning), Wonder Woman (5/10), Batman (8/10), Superman (9.5/10), and Lex Luthor (9/10)? The latter may seem unusual since Luthor is a villain. However, if you’ve been keeping up with what writer Joshua Williamson has done in his run of Superman, the odds make sense.

WARNING! Spoilers for DC K.O. No. 4

Lex Luthor spent the last year and some change becoming a hero, losing and later regaining his memory, and bringing the villains into Darkseid's tournament. Each change showed him in a new light, but, more importantly to DC K.O., he became stronger and smarter. That’s why it wasn’t shocking when Lex used the last bit of energy to shoot Superman in the back to win the tournament and become King Omega. Now it's time to fight Darkseid (who's now out of Booster Gold's body).

If you’re a fan of comic books and have read a lot of crossover events, you understand that there’s almost always a twist before the series ends. There was no way DC K.O. was going to be the exception. In this case, it looks like Time Trapper (formerly Doomsday) will have a hand in Darkseid’s defeat, since he was shown on the last panel in the issue. The funny thing is, Time Trapper’s involvement could have been prophesied in Superman No. 19.

During Superman: The Many Deaths of Doomsday, Time Trapper meets Superman at the end of time. He pleads with the Man of Steel to help him, but, after their many battles, Superman doesn't trust him. Looking back at that scene, it would appear that we were looking at the end of the tournament after Darkseid's victory. And with Time Trapper being shown on the last panel, don’t be shocked if DC K.O. No. 5 flashes back to Superman 19.

Another reason I’ve come to this conclusion is that Joshua Williamson is on the creative team of DC K.O. and Superman, and he’s the kind of writer who does everything for a reason. Doomsday, as the Time Trapper, was perfectly placed a little under a year before DC K.O. began, so people would remember when it happened. If his debut wasn’t connected, it wouldn’t have been at the end of everything with the universe on fire.

Could be wrong, of course. Writers like Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson are brilliant and have stated that there will be curveballs in this event. However, and you may call me arrogant, I highly doubt I’m wrong.
