What you need to know

After saying for several years that the connected universe thing wasn’t for them, Warner Bros. and DC changed their minds and are putting an awful lot of eggs in this basket. No pressure or anything for Snyder and company.

  • While Batman v Superman is a follow-up to the somewhat divisive Superman reboot Man of Steel, it’s less of a sequel to that film and more of an expansion of the DC Universe on film (into what is being called the DC Extended Universe). The cast is stacked, and the basic premise of setting up a conflict between the world’s two most famous superheroes sells itself. It certainly has many times over in print. Affleck arrives as a newcomer to the Batman role, yet he’ll be playing a slightly weary, more cynical version.

There will be villainy, of course, including Luthor, Doomsday and perhaps another bad guy as well. Aside from Wonder Woman, who will feature in a prominent role, we should also get our first glimpses of Aquaman, Cyborg and the Flash as Warner Bros. plants the seeds for their own solo flicks and the two-part Justice League extravaganza that’s in the works as well.

Expect a darker tone than most Marvel films, though trailers and clips have shown some moments of witty banter too. It’s possible this will be the superhero movie equivalent of “too big to fail,” which is good, because Warner can’t afford for it not to come through.
