WEBTOON Entertainment has been making big moves lately. They’ve begun acquiring comic books from Marvel, like Zeb Wells’ Amazing Spider-Man and Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers, and IDW properties like Godzilla: Unnatural Disaster. It’s not shocking that they’ve struck a partnership with BOOM! Studios.

Jen Harned, President of BOOM! Studios said, "We are excited to partner with Webtoons to bring four of our bestselling titles to vertical scroll. BOOM! Studios is always looking for more ways to reach new and current fans, and WEBTOON's unique platform provides a great opportunity to experience our content."

What are the BOOM Studios comic books coming to WEBTOON? Read on to find out.

Something Is Killing The Children

  • Writer: James Tynion IV
  • Artist: Werther Dell'Edera
  • Colorist: Miguel Muerto

Something is Killing the Children is a title that I would recommend to anybody who enjoys comic books or horror. The idea that only children can see monsters is a terrifying thought. What’s scarier is that the kids are the ones who create them. And even though adults can’t see the beasts, they can still be hurt and killed by them.

Beyond the idea of the story is the amazing protagonist, Erica Slaughter. A new character from the mind of writer James Tynion IV and artist Werther Dell'Edera. I remain on record saying she will become one of the best comic book characters of all time. When the series eventually pops up on WEBTOON, you can find out what makes her great.

"Experience the Eisner Award-winning horror comic written by James Tynion IV, which has sold over 5 million copies. Something Is Killing the Children focuses on the missing children of Archer’s Peak. Most don’t return — but the ones that do have terrible stories. "

Wynd

  • Writer: James Tynion IV
  • Artist: Michael Dialynas

The first thing I noticed when looking up this comic is the art. It’s bright, cheerful, and has a warm vibe. However, after reading the synopsis of the story, the happiness in the image above hides something darker. Apparently, “heritage is punishable by death” and he is a magical being. Because of that, he's forced to hide who he is.

"This series from the GLAAD Award-winning writer-artist duo of Tynion and Michael Dialynas follows Wynd, a young boy with a secret: magical blood runs in his veins. When his secret is threatened, he embarks on a dangerous adventure with his best friend. "

Since this is from the mind of James Tynion, I won't be shocked if there is a deeper meaning to this. He has a fantastic way of telling stories and making sure that they relate to things happening today. In this case, it could be raising awareness about how some LGBTQ+ people can't be their true selves without the threat of danger.

Fence

  • Writer: C.S. Pacat
  • Artist: Johanna the Mad
  • Colorist: Joana Lafuente

The trailer for the Fence does an amazing job of showing viewers and potential readers what they’re getting into. It has an anime vibe with incredible art by Johanna the Mad. The story doesn’t seem to fit the trend of supernatural and mystical stories like the previous two comics, so it will be intriguing to see what it brings. Plus, it’s written by New York Times Best Selling Author, C.S. Pacat, so it’s worth giving it a read. I certainly will.

"A story in the tradition of sports comics and manga, Fence follows young fencer Nicholas Cox as he makes a name in the world of competitive fencing and lives up to his father’s reputation."

Lumberjanes

  • Writers: Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, ND Stevenson
  • Artist: Brooke Allen

I had no idea what to expect from this, then I watched the trailer and couldn’t stop smiling. This reminds me of the cartoons I watched in the '80s and '90s about kids getting into trouble at camp and meeting and being attacked by monsters. However, the danger isn’t so bad that you’re worried about the characters dying. At the end of the story, the characters become lifetime friends. It's like a less violent and friendlier Papergirls. WEBTOON definitely has a winner with this one.

"A summer camp tale about five friends determined to have an amazing summer, despite the rampant supernatural phenomena around them. Lumberjanes is an Eisner Award-winning and GLAAD Award-winning series. "
