Over four years ago, Insomniac Games took the world by storm by announcing not only one, but two video games based on Marvel superheroes. One of them was heavily expected, as it was the long-awaited sequel to the incredible Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4. But the other reveal was one that nobody saw coming at the time. Marvel's Wolverine was suddenly a reality, and players around the world couldn't wait to learn more about it. Unfortunately, that has yet to happen to this very date, but that will likely change soon.

After almost half a decade of silence, the rumor mill is finally churning again. Multiple insiders claimed that PlayStation was gearing up for a big event near the end of September, and that Marvel's Wolverine would make an appearance. Lo and behold, a State of Play is officially coming our way on Wednesday, September 24. So, will it finally be the day when the screen cuts to black and we hear the words "I'm the best at what I do, but what I do isn't very nice"? Well, let's break everything down.

What to expect from the State of Play

The official PlayStation blog post revealed that Saros, the upcoming title developed by Housemarque, will get a gameplay reveal on the State of Play ahead of its 2026 release. Interestingly enough, multiple rumors suggest that Marvel's Wolverine will also hit shelves in 2026. Coupled with the fact that we haven't heard anything about Insomniac's title in an official capacity for over four years, this would all but confirm that Logan will have the spotlight to himself.

Marvel fans could also be treated to yet another "surprise". It's worth remembering that Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, the 4v4 tag-team fighting game, is also a result of the collaboration between PlayStation Studios and Marvel. That means that the title is very likely to be showcased in the State of Play presentation too, and perhaps we can even get an official release date, as we only have a 2026 window at the time being.

Interestingly enough, it has been reported that Insomniac is also working on a Marvel's Venom game that could potentially be released in late 2027. There might be a very slight chance that a reveal could come tomorrow, but it seems highly unlikely given that they wouldn't want to take away from Marvel's Wolverine either.

Fans are also hopeful that Naughty Dog's next project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, will also make an appearance in State of Play. However, it's worth remembering that the game was announced during The Game Awards 2024. So, if it doesn't make an appearance, perhaps it's because more will be revealed during TGA 2025. After all, the State of Play will have a duration of approximately 35 minutes, which isn't really a lot. So, with Saros and potentially Marvel's Wolverine getting a major part of that screentime, it's likely that PlayStation will save some surprises for later.

Marvel's Wolverine gameplay and characters should be showcased

Our only official look at Marvel's Wolverine so far came in the form of a pre-rendered trailer that didn't even show Logan's face. Now that four years have gone by, we need to get a full-on gameplay reveal. By the end of the State of Play, it wouldn't be too far-fetched to assume we'll know whether the game will be open world (which seems unlikely) or will feature linear levels (which might be the way to go). We could get a glimpse of Logan wearing different suits, his traversal mechanics, and, of course, what the combat will be like.

Marvel's Wolverine would ideally be a very violent game, given its titular character. This is just pure speculation on our side, but Insomniac Games might've even worked on a dismemberment system that serves to showcase Logan's power. All those little details that form a part of combat encounters should be displayed on the upcoming trailer to fully give us a feel of what to expect when we finally get to play as Wolverine.

Little story tidbits should also be displayed. This is perhaps the element of the game that will be surrounded in the most secrecy until the game's release. However, we should learn the identity of some of the bad guys who are set to take over the spotlight at the very least. Besides, if Wolverine is set to have any allies, it could be possible that they are revealed too. After all, our first look at Miles Morales came during a trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4.

A release window for Marvel's Wolverine is a must

Reports have strongly suggested that Marvel's Wolverine will be coming in 2026. Unfortunately, we would be completely in the dark about a potential release if we only had official information to go by. That's why a launch date or window would be the perfect way to end Insomniac's segment in the State of Play presentation.

Even if the game ends up releasing in 2027, we need to know when it's coming our way. Marvel's Wolverine could be featured during other video game events soon, such as The Game Awards 2025, but the release window and gameplay reveal should be showcased on the State of Play presentation. It's been hard to go four years without even a glimpse of the upcoming title, so with a bit of luck, the wait will prove to be worth it.
