3. The Mandalorian

This is not the way.

That's what fans of The Mandalorian were saying when reports surfaced claiming that the show would not be back for a fourth season, ending the Disney Plus series with a final season that wasn't very final. Yes, wild as it may seem, one of the streaming service's most popular TV shows of all time has been cancelled with little fanfare.

The reasoning behind this decision isn't down to any lack of popularity; it's down to the fact that the show is so popular that Lucasfilm and Disney have decided to continue the story with a movie instead. The Mandalorian and Grogu is set for release in 2026 and it will indeed feature Pedro Pascal back as Din Djarin alongside Grogu for another intergalactic adventure. It's no doubt going to be their biggest adventure yet as the studios are clearly confident that the fans will show up to the movie theaters to see it. And they will.

Still though, it's hard to overlook the fact that the series has just been quietly shelved. Fans worried that might happen when the film was announced, as season 4 was already confirmed. But months later, insider Daniel Richtman confirmed that, even after the movie, the show wouldn't return in its current format, adding that if the characters return, it would be in a different project. The Hollywood Reporter has since confirmed that The Mandalorian and Grogu was indeed a pivot from the original plan for The Mandalorian season 4.

Logistically, a movie makes sense given the popularity of the Star Wars characters and Pedro Pascal's busy schedule (he is leading both The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, and has just joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Fantastic Four: First Steps). But the unusual way that it came about has certainly left fans feeling a little disheartened. Season 3 of The Mandalorian was arguably the show's weakest installment yet, and nobody knew that it was the final season whenever it was first streaming. Even with the characters returning, the show deserved a definitive ending to close its Disney Plus chapter and launch the next one.

But the characters are returning, so that helps cushion the blow of what should have been the most shocking cancellation of the year.
