Marvel fans have spent a long time waiting for X-Men '97 season 2. The Marvel Animation show streamed its first season on Disney Plus back in 2024, so to say that audiences are ready for new episodes would be quite the understatement. It's set to return for that aforementioned second season this summer, but it seems that fans have already gotten a premature look at it in the form of a leaked trailer.

The show, which is a revival of the universally-acclaimed X-Men: The Animated Series, was being showcased during Comic Con Revolution Ontario and that featured an exclusive first look at the season 2 trailer (which reportedly came as a surprise to the fans in attendance). As we've seen so many times with events like this, the clip was filmed and has since leaked online - very quickly sending the internet into meltdown.

Marvel fans react to the first X-Men '97 season 2 teaser trailer

While we will not be sharing the clip here (and it has seemingly since begun being taken down), Comic Book Movie reports that the clip focuses on the aftermath of the season 1 finale, showing the X-Men scattered through time. It also reportedly features the return of the adult, villainous Apocalypse, who was teased in the closing moments of the season 1 finale, and we also see Bishop attempt to restore the timeline by returning the X-Men to the '90s. *** cue X-Men theme! ***

Naturally, the trailer has resulted in widespread excitement from fans around the world who weren't expecting to get a sneak peek of the upcoming new season on this Sunday night! One was thrilled about the possibility of Bishop teaming up what what appears to be Colossus, simply adding "Hell Yeah!". Another pointed to what seems to be the most formidable variation of the X-Men team to appear in any TV media, suggesting that it might come from the season's later episodes.

Fans were also extremely receptive to the return of Apocalypse. The villain served as the overarching big bad of the original Animated Series, so it made sense that the first season of X-Men '97 steered clear of him - both to give viewers a new villain to enjoy and to slowly build back up to his inevitable return - and now it's time to see him in all his intimidating glory all over again.

The season 1 finale saw the X-Men successfully defeat that season's big bad Bastion but the fight took everything they had. The result saw them thrown all throughout time, with some of them encountering En Sabah Nur all the way back in ancient times. Yes, young Apocalypse will play into this season as the first mutant and, should the X-Men befriend him in this timeline, can they perhaps find a way to prevent him from becoming their big bad once more in the present? We'll have to wait and see.

One thing is for sure, however: X-Men '97 season 2 sounds like it's going to be a banger. All we need now is the exact release date and we're set for a summer with Earth's Mightiest Mutants!
