SZA wants to play Storm in a possible Marvel origin story

A look at SZA and her dream of portraying Storm. Could Marvel Studios make that happen in the MCU?

When it comes to triple threats (Singer, Dancer, Actor), SZA is in a class all her own. Her sophomore album SOS has officially spent more weeks in the Billboard 200’s Top 10 than any other album by a Black artist - surpassing Michael Jackson’s Thriller album. Now, she has her sights set on conquering the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a recent interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, the 5-time Grammy Award winner and Oscar Nominee was asked by Hudson if she has a favorite superhero or dream role. Gushing about her dad and how he collects first-edition Marvel and DC comics, SZA expressed that she’d like to play X-Men’s Storm, saying:

I think that would be gnarly if I can be Storm’s origin story...”

Taking into account her successful acting debut in One of Them Days and her record-setting (133.5 million viewers) 2025 Super Bowl halftime performance with Kendrick Lamar - Marvel creators may want to consider her offer to play the Omega-Level mutant with weather manipulating powers (a.k.a. Ororo Monroe).

I would love to see SZA as Storm alongside the X-Men in the MCU; however, I’m not sure an origin story as part of Phase 6 would be viable at this point given that the X-Men's introductions are inevitable. Having said that, SZA would be in great company with actresses such as Oscar winner Halle Berry who portrayed Storm in four X-Men films, and Alexandra Shipp who portrayed a younger Storm in two of the franchise's prequel films.

There were a number of rumors recently suggesting that Marvel was considering recasting T’Challa for Black Panther 3 but that is unlikely. That likely rules out the MCU adapting one of Storm's biggest storylines in the comics, in which the superhero power-couple of T’Challa and Storm got married (Black Panther No. 18). It certainly would have been a game-changing adaptation if they made it happen. SZA as Storm, an African witch-priestess of weather and a tribal princess of Kenya in a nuptial with T’Challa, the King of Wakanda and avatar of Bast the Panther God - would be the iconic royal MCU matrimony for the ages!

If Marvel did want to show us the history between Storm and T'Challa, they could do a flashback love story and adapt the Storm comic miniseries, in which T’Challa and Ororo meet up as teens in Ethiopia. In the miniseries, our future Avenger and X-Men are on a dangerous mission to track down a poacher and supervillain, Bull - who is on an evil trek of his own, to capture a “Windrider” (a.k.a. Storm) who has the power to control the weather. Could SZA convincingly portray a young Storm on the streets of Ethiopia? Given her raw and natural delivery in One of Them Days, I would say yes.

Coming off of a fantastic first quarter of 2025 with a No. 1 movie in One of Them Days, a No. 1 album in SOS, and the most watched Super Bowl halftime in history - Marvel creators may want to capture some of that SZA “magic” and cast her as Storm in any MCU storyline, as her "Camp SZA" loyal superfans would be here for it too!
