Amid the buzz on the X-Men entering the MCU, one possible cast member has spoken on the chances of taking part!
Amid the big turns for Avengers: Doomsday is how it’ll bring back characters from the 2000s Fox X-Men movies. For a long while, the X-Men were off-limits to the MCU due to the rights issues with Fox owning them while Disney held the rest of the Marvel catalog.
That changed when Disney acquired Fox in 2019, with Deadpool & Wolverine featuring Hugh Jackman back as the claw-wielding X-Man. While he, James Masters, Patrick Stewart, and others will appear in Doomsday, rumors abound that the MCU will reboot the franchise within its own canon.
Fueling those reports is the rumor that Sadie Sink’s character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is telepath Jean Grey. While we have to wait on that, fans are already doing their own imagined castings for other X-Men.
A regular name coming up is Sophie Thatcher as the star of Yellowjackets and horror movies Companion and Heretic has been pushed to play Rogue. The Southern mutant with the power to absorb the life force and powers of others was played by Oscar-winner Anna Paquin in the original movies.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz, Thatcher was asked about the rumors and acknowledged them but denied she’d been offered the role.
"I see what I [get] tagged [in]. Yeah. And I'm like, interesting. I'm open if it's a director who's down to collaborate and listen to me. I want to have a voice. I know that's absolutely possible, and people do that all the time, but I would just want to make sure it's the right story being told. Especially if it's such a huge franchise. It's like that itself has such an impact, and I want to make sure it's the right story.”
Thatcher’s casting would be intriguing. Paquin’s take on Rogue was different from that in the comics, where the mutant is portrayed as a sassy Southerner with sex appeal while dealing with being unable to touch others. Paquin’s turn was more muted and lacked Rogue’s powers of super strength and flight.
Thatcher would likely be able to copy the comic book Rogue better. Anyone who’s seen Yellowjackets knows she can get the accent right, thanks to her perfectly playing the younger version of Juliette Lewis’ character. She also has the right amount of sass and appeal with the acting chops to sell Rogue’s trauma.
Of course, one tiny stumbling block is Thatcher admitting to Horowitz that she has almost no knowledge whatsoever of X-Men. "It's the blue people? So, I'm going to get a lot of hate on that one [Laughs]. Jennifer Lawrence in, like, blue. Mystique. I'm open. Yes. Always. I'm open to anything."
Mentioning Mystique is interesting, as in the comics, the shape-shifting assassin acts as Rogue’s foster mother. Thatcher may be a newbie to the X-Men world, but she seems open to the possibility of making fan dreams come true to play Rogue in the MCU.
