Evans, Renner Apologize for Jokes Calling Black Widow A Slut
By Nick Tylwalk
I’m pretty sure that Black Widow has earned enough respect among her male teammates in the Avengers movies that none of them would say sexist things about her. Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner probably don’t think that either, bit both actors were forced to apologize today due to some rather thoughtless jokes at the Widow’s expense during the Avengers: Age of Ultron press tour.

After an interview with Digital Spy (which you can see below) that featured Renner calling Black Widow a “slut” and Evans adding that she was “a complete whore,” both men issued apologies through their representatives today.
Evans’ statement included the following:
"We answered in a juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize."
Renner, meanwhile, played the “we’re really tired from all of the press we’ve been doing” card:
"I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour."
Like mst people, I’ve never met Evans and Renner personally, and I’m certain they were just joking around in the face of questions they’ve been asked ad nauseam, and no doubt were exaggerating the fact that Natasha has been pretty close with both Hawkeye and Captain America while appearing to share a moment or two with Bruce Banner and/or the Hulk in Age of Ultron. That’s not a spoiler, by the way, as I haven’t seen the movie yet, merely an observation.
Yet you’d expect both men to be a bit more savvy about statements like this, since they’re Hollywood veterans. I’d accept their apologies and just move on, but it’s possible not all fans will feel the same way.
